I'm Just Playing The Game To Play It

Video Games aren't that fun anymore. I still love them and try to play between, life, school and work. But when I sit down these days it's hard to find a fun game. I think I'm just playing games because I'm accustomed to it now. I'm just playing these games, I don't even enjoy them anymore. There are so many things wrong with video games these days. Just loan me your eyes for a few minutes so I can complain.

Number One: Fuck your realism

I'm not playing video games because I want them to be realistic. I don't want to have shitty realistic driving controls in Grand Theft Auto. I want a drift button like Saints Row. Driving a real car is just fine, in the real world. I'm not playing video games to simulate the real world. Even the Sims understands this. Yet somehow GTA and other games are concerned with realism. Realism doesn't sell video games. Fun does. Nobody expected SRIV to sell as much as it did, but the game was so damn fun people couldn't stay away. I pre ordered and still break it out every now and then... yesterday. Everyone else is so focused on realism. Don't be surprised if that's a mislabeled pic of GTA V.

Number Two: Over-saturation

There is simply too much of the same thing. Every Month there is a new FPS or Survival Horror. But if you like RPGs you have to wait a year. Is it that hard to make something different. Also, why are so many FPS during war times. I'm really tired of Zombie Games, they're played all the way out. Infamous 2 had a great idea with the Festival of Blood DLC. Vampires: Because Everyone Else Does Zombies. It gets old seeing the market filled with the same type of games, every week, every month, every season, every year. Let's be honest here, Dead Island was an awesome looking game, but was it any different than your standard zombie game.

Number Three: Where's the Originality
There can only be so many God of War and Halo ripoffs. It's like developers got lazy and said "Hey it worked for this game, we can do it too" There's no more originality. Make a few changes to the story, do a skin swap on the main character and there you go the newest Halo but not really. It get's old. I don't like Minecraft, it's just not my cup of tea, but I can say this; Notch is one original bastard. He didn't just do what worked for other people. He did something new and groundbreaking. I can't knock a guy for doing something unique when it's so easy to be the same as everyone else. BTW, Uncharted copied Tomb Raider, but let's be honest, they did Tomb Raider better than Tomb Raider.

Number Four: Under-Saturation
"But you just said over saturation was a problem" Well some genres have the opposite problem. Who makes basketball games? 2K. Who makes football games? EA. Who makes wrestling and MMA games? THQ 2K. Do you get my point. When was the last time a good racing game came out that wasn't Forza or Gran Turismo? Some genres have one company running  unopposed. They have no competition whatsoever, so why try to make improvements? Can somebody at least try, I don't a licensed game. All Pro Football was better than Madden, but only saving 8 teams to each roster and one year franchise modes, cut the replay value short. Now try it again with 32 team rosters, and an unlimited season mode. I'll jump up and pre order.

By now I'm hoping you understand why I can't be a hardcore gamer. Other than having a life, it's like we play the same games over and over again. When  was the last time you played a game and smiled with joy. I'm not talking about saying to yourself "This is a nice game." When was the last time you played a game so awesome you had to run and tell everybody how awesome it was. You may just say I'm a picky gamer but whatever. The well has run dry, but so many companies try to pass dirt for water. Can we just try something different one day and stop being so afraid to be different.
