Since we're around halfway through the show, I think it's time to sit back and break it down:
Kill La Kill is the anime of the year (to me). But why?

Satsuki and Ryuko showdown |
Straight off the bat, Kill La Kill is strong and fast. If this was based on a manga, just imagine how many chapters the first episode alone would have covered. 12 episodes in and we've seen enough content to fill up 3 "regular" shows. The pacing is merciless, giving the viewers no blinking time whatsoever. What's beautiful is that this is not a bad thing. That's because the style of animation (which I'll dig into later) and the pacing go hand in hand.
Satire La Satire
This here is why I'd recommend this show to any anime fan. Kill La Kill is basically Japan's version of South Park. Every single episode takes shots at multiple cliches around anime and Japanese culture. It's like the creators took every single stereotype and embraced them even more, which resulted in a unique play. Goku uniforms are a tribute to Son Goku and his power. Just like Ryuko (protagonist) having to beat "The Elite 4" is a Pokémon reference. Things like fanservice or the overused typical school setting have a different purpose in this show. This changes the reception completely.

So How Is The Plot?
This show's Achilles' heel. Or is it? This is where Kill La Kill gets the most criticism. "Kill La Kill's story is dumb." I partially agree.
The plot tends to be hidden under a lot of craziness. Some episodes even blatantly divert from Ryuko's goal. However, my take on this is that the show doesn't depend on plot to be great. Also, as for the episodes that almost feel like filler, I feel they still contribute in other ways. Like establishing bonds, or touching upon controversial subjects like greed. (Mako's family episode)
My comparison of Kill La Kill with South Park might not be completely accurate, but it's clear where the show's intentions lie. Minimal plot, but a very "in your face" approach nonetheless, whether it's action or fanservice.
OST
When it comes to the soundtracks, Kill La Kill is a winner. Songs playing during action scenes are instant reminders of Attack On Titan. Everything made sense once I found out it's Hiroyuki Sawano's music. The man behind the Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist and Gundam Unicorn OST. As an OST collector, I'm looking forward to the album release which is slated for December 25th. The best Christmas present, it's that good.
Here is the preview:
In my personal opinion, Kill La Kill is the greatest anime of 2013 because of all the above. I'm saying this fully aware of the fact that it's not even complete yet. I rate it so high because I haven't watched a show that offered this much on different levels in a long time. It's a fun show that isn't scared to go places other shows wouldn't. Admittedly, Kill La Kill isn't for everyone. But who can't appreciate a bit of fanservice mixed with crazy action, humor, all in beautiful animation once in a while? If not for the show, you should be at least grateful for the cosplay ideas Kill La Kill gave us.

... Or you could find some other means to get the episodes.
Bottom line is: watch it. You have my blessing.

ReplyDeleteSatsuki > Ryuko. YES!
DeleteIs Kill La Kill's plot dumb or is it creative?
ReplyDeleteNeither. While we are yet to see it fully unfold, so far it's simple. There are enough elements now to create several theories for the future. But right now, you won't be racking your brain.
