You Should Be Reading: Happiness

Synopsis

Happiness is the not so happy manga created by Shuuzou Oshimi (Aku no hana, Chi no Wadachi). The story centers around Makoto Okazaki who is attacked one night by a vampire. Once turned he struggles to figure things out such as life, being a normal member of society and the strain he would leave on his family and friends. The story also centers around his friend Gosho who tries to help him figure things out. Through twists and turns we see the evolution of not just Gosho and Okazaki but his family, Yuki, another turned vampire and so many other characters.

Why You Should Be Reading

The series has been running since 2015 with a total of 36 chapters and ongoing. "Chi no Wadachi" is also being published at the same time so both series are monthly. "Happiness" is a quick read that's easy to get hooked on. The characters are very introspective. No one acts or talks the same as it gives off a realistic approach to not only being humans but vampires as well. The artwork does a great job in showing us what it's like to be a vampire going through the change as well as being bloodthirsty. It's almost as if you're going on a trip with them as the entire world bends to fit their delusional state. The story is told not only through the plot but the art which is cool because not only does it make reading the series a lot easier but the artwork in general is very beautiful to look at.

Currently there are 6 volumes out in English. Kodansha Comics USA are releasing the volumes at a decent pace.  It's an awesome read that takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and adventures. If I had to rate the series now I'd give it a 7/10. I personally like the series and look forward to reading it monthly.
