Wonder Girls - Wonder World Album Review

Another Edition of Vintage Reviews

Without founding members Hyuna and Sunmi, Wonder Girls released their 2nd full length album "Wonder World"  in 2011 with new member Lim. For the longest it was regarded as one of the best albums from a Korean Girl Group until 2015 when their third album "Reboot" arguably took that place. Today, I will be reviewing that iconic album.

Wonder World consists of 12 fresh tracks geared toward love, strength and fun. The album's lead single was "Be My Baby", an upbeat pop song about longing for the love of another person. The song had tight raps and nice singing but the overall feel of the song is its selling point. To this day, 6 years later, people still smile while listening to the song. I myself reminisce about all the moments I had when enjoying the number. This is the overall feel of the rest of the album. You have songs like "Girls Girls"  which is an ode to Womanhood and overcoming adversity. The song keeps the upbeat nature of the album but it is much slower compared to other songs.

"G.N.O", the album's opening song, serves as a great appetizer for the rest of the project. The song has a riveting beat that makes you want to dance and the chorus plus the vocals in the final verses really get you riled up into singing along. It truly is (I hate these words but) an iconic bop. The same could be said for the ending song "Nu Shoes" which is surprisingly in English.

Lim hooks up with rapper San E for the fun, cheery track "act Cool" that had some nice raps that foreshadowed how good of a rapper Lim would become. Yubin and Sohee dominate the track "SuperB" while Yeun and Sunye collaborate for "Long Long Time". While being a one of the biggest Korean Pop groups and naturally having writers and producers create for them, the girls participated in lyrics as well as production, further showing off all of their talents. With these songs, we got to see each member's strengths outside of the entire group.

Wonder World is filled with ballads, dance tracks and slow jams while having top notch writing, production, singing, and rapping. Even though this was their second album, it was more like their first as the girls moved far away from their previous gimmick of being nice and dainty. With this album not only did they go for a more mature style but the music itself is sustainable. Its more than just a cutesy album with some mediocre singing, a rapper who can barely rap and no real substance. They delivered with passion along with the other traits I named above. The group proved to be not only popular because of their look but artists in their music.

Yes, as I said, the album is not spectacular in subject nor is it an eye opening project but what it is is an album of classic music. Every song is lovable. It has tons of replay ability and a refreshing atmosphere. I rate this album a 8/10.
