Black Superhero: Vigilante

Donny Fairchild is a man who once had everything in front of him. He was on the path to the NBA and was a standout basketball player. However, he went undrafted and ended up playing overseas for a while before returning to America. Here in America he hasn't done much with his life. Donny spends his days playing basketball at the local rec center or working as a janitor for the local college. At night he spends all his time smoking weed and trying to forget the past. Donny is effectively what is known as a burnout.

The one thing going well for Donny is love. He's happily engaged to his girlfriend Dorrie even if they have their rocky moments. Mainly because she wants Donny to take a bigger role in helping the community. She's a college student who works in the alumni office and one day is "accidentally" run over but it's obvious that she was killed on purpose. Donny however doesn't believe this to be an accident. The car never tried to stop according to witnesses, and of course we see it didn't but Donny didn't know that. He tries to find answers but has no luck on his own.

Meanwhile Dorrie's mother Nina, a respectable business woman, has made peace with this on the outside. Yet, she's urging Donnie to let her find the work Dorrie was doing so that she can handle this situation in her own dirty way. That likely would have included Mike Regalado who is respected as mad scientist, but he and Nina have a few secrets of their own. Going through her things Donny finds a custom meteor chain and a costume.

He reluctantly turns to his estranged father, Percy better known as Iceburg Slim The Second, who happens to be one of the biggest gangsters in the city. His father uses his network of: pimps, prostitute, gamblers, drug dealers, hired muscle, gang members, police officers and generally shady people to find answers. His one condition is that Donnie finally accept that he wasn't meant for bigger things and join the family business when all of this is done.

Donny forces himself to accept it and the two hit the streets looking for more than what the police would give them. The two shake down various people with Donnie realizing he isn't much different than his father. Meanwhile his father is telling him that Donnie needs to back out if it turns out Dorrie was into some "deep shit." They begin getting close to answers before what looks to be a gas leak blows up Donnie's house.

Donnie is rescued by Mike and Nina. It's then that he learns Dorrie was following in Mike's footsteps and that Mike was The Eastsider, a vigilante from 20 years ago who took on the Mexican Mafia and crooked cops. Mike was forced to retire after a sniper shot him causing him to crash his motorcycle and become paralyzed from the waist down. It's revealed that Dorrie had learned some of the alumni had embezzled millions from the school and was looking to find out who before her murder.

Nina and Mike essentially give Donny the secret hideout Mike had used 20 years before and tell him that this world isn't for him. But, they also leave him a costume similar to the ones Mike and Dorrie had worn. Donny's dad shuts down his businesses and lays low for a while, meanwhile Donny hops on Mike's old motorcycle and takes to the street as Vigilante looking for answers.

Eventually Nina comes around to help him. There's this funny moment when Donny is walking through a BDSM club in full costume and nobody looks at him strange but he's confused by everything going on around him at the moment. Eventually he finds the man he's looking for and begins asking him questions. Only to turn around and get beat up by a dominatrix. He finally gets the upper hand but when club security arrives he makes his escape by jumping out a window and landing several floors below on his back.

Mike stitches up Donny's wounds and begins to train him so that he doesn't get beat up all the time. Donny breaks into the home of Vance Childers the man that both he and Nita believe to be guilty of the murder. However Vance already knows who Donny is even with the mask and claims he's trying to solve the murder as well. Vance reveals that he was following his leads and believes Dorrie wasn't killed over the money but something else. He starts to explain what he thinks it was then he's shot in the head by a sniper as police kick in the door and see an unmasked Donnie standing over Vance's dead body.

Vigilante Southland is currently ongoing so that's as much of the story that's been revealed at the time of me writing this so there's plenty of time to still check out the series since it's only 6 parts.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet. You can also check out his playthrough of Sleeping Dogs or Skyrim
