The original Batwing, David Zavimbe, stepped down because he felt that Batman was wrong in believing that the bat symbol was feared world wide. While David went on to silently dispense a more violent justice, that DC refuses to give us, Batman moved on to his next recruit. The son of Lucius Fox his tech expert, Luke Fox.
Growing up Luke saw a young black kid gunned down and that's what drove him to wanting to be a hero. When he saw the bat symbol flashed into the sky he knew someone was out there doing more than the police. Being the son of one of the smartest men in DC meant Luke was naturally a genius as well, the whole Fox family is. Luke jokes around a lot so people don't often notice he's a genius at first despite the fact that he graduated MIT early.
Despite receiving hundreds of job offers after graduation Luke chose a different path. He chose to become an MMA fighter. He had hoped that Batman would choose him for Batman Inc. after seeing that he was smart, determined and a capable fighter. However, Bruce chose David because he didn't want to put Luke into danger since he was the son of one of his oldest and closest allies.
Batman sends Luke to Africa to fill the role that David vacated, putting Luke in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Luke told his father that he was taking a trip to the motherland to get in touch with African culture. This just made Lucius madder, after Luke chose to become an MMA fighter instead of going to work already.
Luke is tasked with finding out information on Lady Marabunta and how her army gets such high tech gear. Luke decides he's going to do the opposite of what Bruce said and takes on Lady Marabunta in a fight to get information. He learns they've been profiting from blood diamonds. Luke heads out to shit down the mine and is ambushed by the warlord Lion-Mane. He feels that Luke wouldn't be competition and sends his three wives to fight Luke. Luke tries his best but he's forced to retreat before he dies.
Luke returns to Gotham to visit his family but they're attacked by the Marabunta. Luke assumed they were there for him but in reality they wanted his father. Luke was shot several times without his batsuit and failed to save his father. Luke found his mother and sisters in a safe room and his mother told him to remain at the house until police arrived. Luke also informed Bruce who told him that Batman alone would handle it. Luke of course left and went to join Batman anyway.
The two were able to locate Lucius Fox by a tracer implanted in him, that all Wayne Enterprise employees have. While Batman took out Lady Marabunta, Luke took out her soldiers and rescued his father from having his mind drained. When Luke returned home the police and his mother were already there. His mother who had been the biggest supporter of him lectured him about his lack of responsibility and how his father was right.
Luke then goes to see an ex-girlfriend, because surely, that's always the right answer. She had dumped Luke because he hadn't told her he was going to Africa. She only agreed to have the date so she could do it in person not just over the phone. On the way home he's patrolling as Batwing and chases down the mercenary Lady Vic as she's running away from an explosion. She easily takes down Luke with some small EMPs.
When Luke gets home his ex is there, her father had just died. With no one else to go to she ran to Luke. The two have sex in the shower and he calls Batman in the morning asking for access to some equipment to modify his suit. Luke tracks down Lady Vic and admits he could never beat her in a fight. So he poisons her with Scarecrow's fear toxin instead. With that arrest he officially became Batwing and was welcomed to the Batfamily.
