Yung Joc - New Joc City

"Where them chopper bullets stop, nobody knows, babies cryin, niggas dyin all over the place. Momma cryin cause there's blood all over her face this is not a game this is not a test."

What if I told you that Yung Joc once dropped a good album. Long before he was known for outlandish hairstyles and general foolishness Yung Joc was actually a rapper. He an overnight hit with the song "It's Goin Down," which made him a household name before he dropped New Joc City. If we're being honest, New Joc City was a good album. If we continue to be honest, nothing that Yung Joc released afterwards really lived up the standard he set with it. Unless you count "Lookin Boy," that song is immortal and will out live all of us.

I'll just come out and say it, Yung Joc is not a lyrical beast and not all of the tracks have great production. Some of them are forgettable and just went along with the music from that era. I stress again, Yung Joc is not pulling off any lyrical miracles on this one. Yung Joc grew to fame with the song "It's Goin Down," produced by Nitti and everyone kind of expected Nitti to be all over this one. But it was the only track he produced for the album.

Now, I'm not saying that all the production on this one is bad. In fact, there's some really good stuff, or at least really cool. There were no less than three samples of "It's Goin Down," on the album. That's right, Joc has three tracks with samples of Joc. Nobody did that before Joc. That's just real baller shit right there.

Joc is actually pretty funny with the bars. Especially the song "Do Ya Bad." That entire song is filled with different ways he would get revenge on people who crossed him. While there are plenty of murder threats, most of it is just really petty stuff such as promising to get your girlfriend pregnant and having her trick you into raising the baby. But, the most pettiest part goes to this one right here:
If I owe ya guap', pay your ass with counterfeit, oh yea I'll flex ya nigga don't think I can't, have my broad put some suger in your gas tank
That's just extra petty. Forget the counterfeit money part. He's just gonna have sugar put in your gas tank on some 1990s bitter ex shit. One of the cool things about this album is Joc doesn't hesitate to put his friends on with lots of features. Sometimes they make the song too. "Dope Boy Magic" really made me sit and contemplate on if I could sell dope because it was awesome. It's still an awesome song.

Now, every song on the album isn't going to be great but if you cut the skits, 6/13 cool songs isn't bad. I mean, have you heard some of the albums out these days? This is a wonderful album. This is probably the only album where you'll hear someone use "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," to rhyme with Moses, from the Bible, in reference to cooking crack. I don't care what anyone says, this is Yung Joc's best work. You can skip the rest, but listen to this. He has the right to wear whatever anime style hairdo he wants because of this album.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet. You can also check out his playthrough of Sleeping Dogs or Skyrim
Darrell S.

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.
