Black Supervillain: Despot

"Free will is best left to individuals who know how to use it. Like me....and you my son"

Isaiah King - Despot

America is pretty racist, especially the south. I'm talking about 2016 but when Isaiah King was born black people would be openly lynched and nothing would be done about it. It was also a time when segregation was normal and expected. Despite that his parents did the best they could to raise him in a good neighborhood. That didn't work out, they were forced to move after a cross was burned on their front lawn. He would carry the fear of that night with him for the rest of his life.

Eventually he went on to marry a woman named Mary King and have two sons of his own, Jackson and Malcolm. Wanting to set a good example for them he placed his fears aside and marched as in the Civil Rights Movement alongside Martin Luther King Jr. He also had an strong telepathy ability which allowed him to be recruited to the first superhero team in the Wildstorm (now merged with DC) universe.

In order to do this he was required to fake his death. This was because Team One required that he and other team members dedicate their lives to the team in full. The task of the group was to kill the Daemonites who wished to take control of the Earth. While on the team Isaiah was often picked on because of being the weakest telepaths on the team. The first mission the team went on was to take on the Daemonite Lord Helspont. It was a complete failure due to members of the team refusing to put egos aside and wanting to display their power. The team was instantly disbanded after the mission.

Isaiah next went on to become and astronaut and technician for the United Nations space station Monitor One. The space station was going to be used to protect Earth from intergalactic threats. However it experienced a blast of radiation from a comet passing by. Most of the crew ended up dead and the others were imbued with abilities and driven mad. They created a team following Isaiah known as The Warguard. It is at this time Isaiah took the name Despot after he realized the comet had greatly increased his abilities. Truly believing they were protecting the other they attempted to take over the world. Eventually the United Nations were able to defeat The Warguard and freeze them using a cryogenic procedure.

However when the world was in danger they were forced to unfreeze The Warguard so they could help fight off the Daemonites. Despot quickly took control of his team and traveled to the moon where they began their own plan to take control of the world. Stormwatch attempted to capture Despot and send the team into chaos. They failed with Despot killing their member Diva and bringing Strafe over to his side.

Stormwatch next attempted to trick him into the Skywatch satellite so they could crash it. Battalion, Despot's son Jackson, had been brought from the past to see the destruction that would be caused by the plan. Battalion arrived too late to stop the plan and witnessed his father and other members of The Warguard falling from the sky.

Despot managed to survive and was tracked down by Battalion who wanted to end his father's reign of destruction. Despot explained that he wanted to remove free will from Earth. Not because he was evil but because he was still afraid. He told Battalion about the cross burning he witnessed as a child. Lynchings he saw and beating he took during the Civil Rights Movement. Despot felt that if there was no free will violence like this would not happen. He just wanted enough power to mind control the planet to make it a peaceful place.

Battalion allowed Despot to enter his mind so that he can see what love really felt like. Hoping it would work. However Despot was too powerful and Battalion had a hard time keeping Despot from destroying his mind. Battalion was luckily snatched back in time by timespan.

With nobody left who could stop him Despot started erasing the minds of everyone on Earth. However, Battalion who had went back in time and trained attacked him from behind. Despot was still stronger than him and summoned both Stormwatch and Warguard members to attack Battalion. Battalion managed to enter into Despot's mind where he saw all of his father's inadequacies and fears. Feeling bad for him he refused to kill his father. With Despot on his knees Bendix teleports in and shoots him in the back of the head. Pissing off a Despot who was about to surrender.

Despot went on a warpath destroying everything in his way until he could get to Bendix and the rest of Stormwatch. Once he entered into the Stormwatch headquarters he began taking out the members one by one. Eventually Spartan sacrificed his life to kill Despot.
