Review: Manticore #2

 Manticore #2
Writer: Keith A. Miller
Illustrator: Ian Gabriel
Publisher: Rosarium

Previously we looked at Manticore's debut issue. The issue focused on the arrival of Simon into a federal prison as well as a strange beast known as a manticore killing an inmate. While that first issue was great it can often be hard to follow up with an issue that is just as good. The first issue was great but what about the second?

One of the things that really shined in the first issue was the story. It's a  story full of vague references and open motives. Not just for the inmates and government officials lurking, but the guards as well. This issue deals with the fallout of the death in the previous issue. It's interesting to see how the prisoners hate each other yet maintain silence when it comes to answering questions. In addition it shines a light on the corruption within the prison. There are guards who refuse to say anything as well as guards that obviously know more than they're letting on.

The story in this issue definitely helps to move the story forward while creating more questions. Throughout the first two issues a lot of questions have been created. Hopefully in future issues some of these questions come to be answered instead of stringing along readers for too long with no answers.

The art continues to be great. It's in the strange spot where it's more detailed than your average manga, yet less detailed than the average comic book. The art is one of the things I enjoy most about this series. It's not overwhelming yet there's enough that it satisfies your eyes.

Manticore continues to build on the horror it created in the first issue. Somehow the series keeps building up the anticipation for a big event to happen. So far it doesn't seem like it'll be coming anytime soon but you still expect it every time you turn the page. The shit has to hit the fan eventually and when it does all hell will break loose. However Manticore leaves you guessing as to when it will finally happen. It's a good read. If you're interested in checking it out you can pick one up here.
