Kid Quantum: James Cullen
James Cullen was the first Kid Quantum and a legendary warrior. James was born on the planet Xanthu. The government for the planet needed heroes. They discovered that James was a metahuman but he didn't have the ability to pull out his abilities. So they created a belt that would allow him to do so. With the belt he quickly became one of the most popular heroes on his planet. He was chosen to go to Earth and join The Legion of Superheroes. Through it all, James is a screw up. He was a member of the Legion. Tales of his actions carried on throughout the years. He
was truly a legendary warrior. Except for a few major flaws in the story.
First, he wasn't legendary for stopping threats. Second, he was the
first member from The Legion to die in action. Third, he never bothered learning to use his powers without the belt. (It was completely possible. See Kid Quantum II). Fourth, he was the reason
that The Legion added the rule stating that superpowers can't be based
on technology.
Admit it, James is a screw up. Sadly everyone knew the belt was the only thing letting him use his powers and let him risk his life. But, James was also cocky and arrogant. James died on his first mission for The Legion. He didn't like being one of the top heroes for his planet only to be a role player for The Legion. The team was taking on the villain Tangle Web and James was dragging his ass and complaining about how good he was. Once Tangle Web had been captured James walked up talking all that big noise. He didn't realize his belt had stopped working so his force field wasn't up. He got his neck snapped for all his hard work.
That's not even the worst part. He didn't complete one mission for The Legion and he made it harder by not taking it serious. They still gave him a statue. Then at his funeral, terrorist attacked by dropping bombs. They blew up the boys casket. He was destined to lose. He even lost to his little sister.
Powers and Equipment
Jazmin was James little sister and better at him in almost every way. She began her hero tenure at the same time as James but she wasn't as good. However she practiced and was eventually able to use her powers without the stasis belt and they were stronger for her effort. She also took the time to train in various fighting styles. She does wear the belt still but it's just an homage to her older brother. She doesn't need it all. In addition since she wasn't as physically gifted as James she worked hard to become a great strategist.
Without the belt her powers are actually stronger than James'. While he can slow down time to almost a stop she can completely stop it around her as well as enemies. She's also able to warp time slightly around her. During the Robotica storyline Jazmin was elected as the leader for The Legion of Superheroes and led the team for an unspecified amount of time. For some unknown reason she stepped down as leader but continued to fight alongside the team and create strategies.
Here's the problem. We have no idea what happens next. Thanks to DC rebooting the universe, the story never got finished. We know she exists in the new continuity but we have no idea what she's up to. Probably being better than James on an alternate Earth. Either way I'm glad they didn't make her the helpless female heroine who lucked in to her role. She made a name for herself by overcoming any shortcomings she had as a hero by getting better at something else.
