Black Superhero: Victor Freeman

Victor Freeman

Victor Freeman is not a comic book character, he's a manga character. Do you know how rare it is for black characters to get a full manga to themselves? (Check out Knights by Minoru Murao too).

Anyway, Victor Freeman was a famous boxer. He was undefeated. However, this was during the 1880s. Victor was framed for killing a white woman and is now one of the most wanted men in the country. He gains the nicknames of "Bloody Rain" and "Blaster Knuckle." The KKK is in full stride and of course they're behind thins. They're killing black people by the hundred. However the KKK in this world isn't the KKK we know. This KKK is actually made up of demons who eat people. They don't hate black people, but they know nobody cares about black people. This is a recurring theme in the series. Nobody cares about black people so the KKK can kill them by the masses and nobody cars. Black people can report these demons and nobody cares. Victor can show up with proof of his innocence, save the town and nobody will believe him because he's black. Honestly, it's a little depressing because you look around and realize, nothing has changed.

The story follows Victor as he attempts to hunt down the leader of these demons. Along the way he has to deal with being attacked by demons and sheriffs alike. In one instance he comes across a black family on the edge of a town. There had been an entire black only town until it was wiped out by the KKK. This was the only family left. Their daughter had been taken by the KKK and Victor went to get her back in an intense showdown. In the conclusion Victor walked off into the sunset while the woman begged him to stay and be her husband. Victor is just too cool.

Victor basically dominates his competition. His punches are strong enough to break bones in a regular man. He carries multiple guns with almost perfect aim. His ace in the whole is his brass knuckles. You can't really call them brass knuckles because when he makes impact they fire a silver bullet. These are only used on demons because Victor has a no kill rule. That doesn't mean he has to help you survive. He won't kill you but he'll make sure not to save you.

He barely talks through the series. It's short, just 20 chapters. You should really check it out. The art is incredible and features a ton of multi-page spreads that are magnificent. Victor is a man of few words so there isn't always a lot of verbal cues to the story. Instead it focuses on using just pictures to tell a story in several parts. This is most notable in the fights as very few are heavy on the words.
