I'm 100 percent caught up on Terra Formars. But let me be clear. This manga is horrible. I said it. It's disgustingly bad. But don't get me wrong. It's so bad it's good.
Let's talk about the things Terra Formars does well. I'm a nerd. I admit it. The little science lessons they give on each and every bug are awesome. They're wordy but I'd be lying if I said they weren't entertaining. I've learned more about bugs than ever before.
The art is incredibly detailed and simply amazing, except all the roaches have big lips wide noses and curly hair. I'll let that slide because there's probably 19 black people in Japan right now. I'm not even mad, the art is too good.The art is incredibly detailed and it doesn't lose any of that detail in the fights. The fights are what keep you coming back to Terra Formars. Earlier I mentioned the dcience, all of that comes into play. Not just the bugs either. Don't even bother reading this if you haven't had at least one physics class. Physics comes into one of the fights because "roaches don't know science." The Fights are the best part of Terra Formars, anyone who says they're here for a story is a liar. Well that's the three things Terra Formars does well.
The story has the potential to be good. The problem is no character gets any development until they're dying. Can it even be considered development if it doesn't have a chsnce to take effect. Usually in Terra Formars if a character is dying just count them as dead. I also don't understand how every character dies sacrificing themselves for the team. Not one person has said "screw you guys I'm going home." They also don't get any back story, until they're dead.
Let's talk about everything wrong with the roaches. First, in the earliest volume they were on the phone with a human leader. Now that guy hasn't been heard from in approximately 70 chapters, phones don't work on Mars, roaches doesn't understand any human languages and the roaches leader is now a roach selected by other roaches. We call that retconing.
The first 2 trips to Mars provided the roaches with laser rifles, silk and one vehicle. Yet on the third trip they have laser rifles, silk, multiple vehicles, pistols that fire bullets, martial arts and of course the scientifically advanced B.U.G.S. surgery. How? They're just giving the roaches stuff to stay overpowered at this point.
Now the humans. How did the get samples of the Terra Formars to study on Earth when the first trip to mars had no survivors and only two survived the second trip without bringing back samples and they abandoned the only eg because it wouldn't fit. You're thinking about all of that right now, and you're realizing it's true. The story does so much backtracking, it's just ridiculous.
Terra Formars is bad but I can't get enough of it. It's like a compilation of car accidents. You know it's bad but you can't look away. Terra Formars is one of those things that's so bad it's good. Terra Formars is one of those things you read but don't tell anyone because you know they'll judge you when they find out you enjoy it. I don't even enjoy it. I just read it while shaking my head and saying "Are you serious?" That's Terra Formars, it's just that bad, but I can't get enough of it.

ReplyDeleteThey also already had bullets by the 2nd bugs and the vehicles were stolen in bugs 3 and bugs 1 and bugs 2 could have had more than a single vehicle they never say otherwise. They also get the bugs surgery by eating the human who had it. I'm not mad at all that you're saying its so bad that it's good but I do want to know why people are saying its bad. I really hope the anime proves them to be wrong. The ova was good but it skipped 50% of the beginning.

ReplyDeleteAlso many characters don't die and get backstory. In fact most characters who die get no backstory at all and its usually only the ones who fight get one. Like the mantis shrimp guy who was introduced at the beginning of his fight. There were a lot of ups and downs throughout and as a guy who predicted every death in AoT, I couldn't guess who would win.

ReplyDeleteFyi, George Smiles from BUGS 1 was able to kill a roach and send its head back to earth. If you really read and understand the manga, you will know this information. The manga is good, no.. the manga is great. The sci fi elements and the scientific data correlates. I find it really diappointing when ppl judge this manga or the anime just because the cockroaches are black muscle-heads. A lot of western movies depicts asians as drug dealers and middle east people as human trafficers (ei. Taken franchise) and no one bats an eye. But then a cockroach mutated, had an image of a black person, which is killed by invaders who happened to be blonde-white skinned chars and everyone loses their mind. It is ridiculous, really. Just how malicious a human can be?

The Taken Franchise hardly makes Asian's and Middle Easterners depicted as drug dealers and human traffickers. Western movies rarely even deal with drugs and human trafficking as it is.

There is absolutely nothing racist about. The cockroach men don't look like Africans at all. The face structure looks completely different than African people, they resemble homo Erectus. They have dark skin color just like the color of normal cockroach. Or if you are not convinced, maybe those roaches evolved to something black because of the moss they are eating. If you recall, Black moss and insects were chosen for the Mars mission to make the planet warmer [cuz black absorbs more heat than light colors]. There is absolutely nothing racist about that, nor something racist about my statement above.

There are numerous black human characters in the story, none of which look anywhere near these insect characters!
