Flame of Recca Volume 16 Review: So Cheesy I Can Taste It

Chapters 148-157

This manga takes so much from Yu Yu Hakusho that it's actually starting to piss me off. After the last volume we see Recca and Kurei going at it and it was good. We start of this volume the same but it quickly goes the opposite way. Recca is being smart but then it gets weird cause Koku finally joins Recca only for Recca and Kurei to exert all of their energy at once. Why waste all of that energy when they could have just gotten to the street fight from the beginning while using their powers throughout. This just proves my point that the author doesn't know how to write a fight. It's either story driven or it's some quick moves to end the fight. This was done purely so Recca could win because with his powers and energy, Recca should not have won. The street fight itself was amazing. Kurei took a rock and broke it over this mans head. He literally rocked him. Even though they were taking so much damage. they kept getting up way too fast and easily. Neither of them got groggy until Recca and Kurei pulled their flames out of their ass.

So Team Hokage wins while Kurei strangely is at peace now but that didn't last as Koran, a clone of Kurei and Kurenai named Rennge, Mokuren and some other random jump him. He's saved by Neon as she pushes him into the water. I'm not surprised Koran turned on Kurei cause Kurei was already planning to do it to him so its whatever but I am surprised at the clone. Also that Mokuren is still alive. So now this sets up Koran going after Recca's mother or Yannagi again because one of them holds the cure to immortality. Either the Tendo Jigoku is inside Yannagi or Kagero. Now at some point, even though I don't want it to happen, Recca and Kurei will team up in the future against the other Kurei clones and the rest of Kurei's team that didn't participate in the fight. As long as Fuuko gets stronger, I don't care who they face.

I thought this was a average volume overall. The fighting was dope and the story progressed a lot but it was so cheesy and lame in the beginning that it kind of ruined a lot of the respect I had for this series. Most importantly I just want more character development between characters. This "meet once and become instantly cool" shit is not cutting it. Let's see why these people love each other besides you wanting them to love each other. Lets also hope the fights are better. So if you were there for the last fight, would you have stolen off Kurei once he was knocked out? I would have snaked his ass.
