Pokemon Snakewood: WTF? Is This?

I have a confession, I really love pokemon games. No, not those games from Nintendo. But those games from "hackers." I haven't played an official Pokemon game since Emerald. (Although I picked up a Platinum, Heart Gold, and Black for a total $20 I'll play them eventually) Custom roms just keep my attention because they reflect what others think the franchise should be. So I play a few of those. I don't even finish most of them because they can be glitchy sometimes. Recently I came across an image on Tumblr. Only to learn it was from a custom rom called Pokemon Snakewood. That picture made me let out an audible "What the fuck?" Well, I went ahead and decided to play it because I don't have any sense.

So the game takes place in the Hoenn Region where post apocalyptic zombie outbreak has taken place. People are killing zombies, zombies are killing people, people are killing people, demons killing everyone. The four horsemen of the apocalypse. I know this sounds crazy but I'm serious, this game is not your friendly save the world pokemon game. It's clear a lot of the characters have given up on living. The game starts with you saving Prof. Birch from a zombie. Eventually Littleroot town is quarantined and closed for good. Your mother is dead. Seriously she's just dead. The main character talks in this game and even asks about her. He's told to just forget her and he doesn't really have a choice. The story is just dark like that. If you aren't prepared for a dark story just walk away.

Audio is alright, there's a few sound glitches but that's to be expected. The music is all new for the game so creating a soundtrack from scratch is a difficult task. The game difficulty is just cheap. Screw this game. You start with a level 5 and you'll be facing level tens by the time you reach the second area of the game. You're going to have to grind this game. Opponents are already much higher levels the whole way through, but most of the trainers use healing items. That's another point that's not fair, there are barely any pokemoarts so don't expect to just pop out a potion, but your opponents will. I would say just play to type advantages but the types of pokemon aren't varied much in the wild because, just because. I thought there were some cool pokemon they created for this game. Well it turns out these were just pokemon I hadn't seen. Someone drop a comment and let me know which game Garchomp and Hydreigon are in. I'll play those. There are some custom pokemon, some are cool, some are dumb. You receive an egg early in the game. It hatches into an egg. At level 30 it evolves, into an egg. At level 45, it evolves into an egg. At that point you're able to use an evolution stone to turn it into one of the 3 legendary dogs. What was the point to that?

Environments are where this game really shines. The map is basically the same as Pokemon Ruby but it's gotten a huge make over. All of the cities now feature changes that would reflect a zombie apocalypse. There are a few pokemon centers, but for the large part you'll have to settle for medkits scattered throughout the world. There's also make shift pokemon centers in houses for some places. The layouts of the cities have also changed with some buildings being destroyed and others being built. There aren't a lot of random civilians in the world because most of them are dead. When you do see them, they're usually in one of the safety zones.

A few of the buildings have exterior damage and there are plenty of makeshift barricades erected to stop the zombies. One of the coolest changes I've seen is Verdanturf. It doesn't exist anymore. There's nothing but a huge crater of lava. This is cool because it shows the power of the 4 Horsemen in this game.

There's a few glitches in the game, mostly with floor tiles so that's no big deal. However there is one glitch that had me stuck in Petalburg Woods for a good half hour. I'll help you out. Near the exit your character will stop moving, but the screen will still move as if the character was still walking. You're going to be controlling the ghost lady you just beat and your character will be standing by the exit. Just control the old lady and walk out. You'll be back controlling your character. That's the one major glitch I was able to beat. If you're into weird pokemon roms, you're going to enjoy this game.
