Red Velvet - The Velvet Album Review

Red Velvet have released their second mini album which is a contrast to their first LP, The Red. This album showcases the more feminine and mature aspects that make up The Velvet.

The album consists of 5 actual songs and 3 remixes of One Of These nights. The album is actually pretty quick to listen to and moves along smoothly. I enjoyed the fact that there was no rapping. Red Velvet is a group that hasn't really been known for rapping and in my opinion, they don't really need it. Not to say that the rapping in the past was bad because it wasn't, its just nice to have a group that doesn't have stereotypical notions.

The title song One Of These nights is pretty good. It comes off as a ballad but it's not typical in the sense of their voices going above and beyond as well the overall composition. It is very slow compared to almost all of their songs, even Be Natural and Automatic. I like this song but it has something missing. The vocals are on point but maybe having their voices or at least Wendy, really giving it her all would propel this song in a better direction. The beat is nice but coupled with the voices and it loses its touch. The lyrics are great overall.

My favorite song on the album is Cool Hot Sweet Love. This song sticks out the most because it has more of an upbeat twist to it. This song could have been on The Red if SM wanted it to be. It definitely has the Velvet feel but still keeping in touch with the Red and that is why its not only my favorite but the best song on the album. It isn't a ballad like the others and it keeps true to what Red Velvet are as a whole. Light Me Up is cool but it doesn't stand out like Cool Hot Sweet Love does. Its upbeat but doesn't have much umph.

First Time and Rose Scent Breeze are good, especially lyrically, but the execution on these ballads didn't come off as powerful as one thought it would. They are lacking in the area of vocals and it just doesn't hit its mark. These girls can sing but its wasted on these two songs. They aren't bad but surely boring enough. When it comes to Korean Music, at this point Ballads are boring and just plane old at this point.

It thought this album was good but it does not live up to the hype that was placed upon this album, nor does it live up to the music Red Velvet has been used to making. Honestly this album is, in my opinion, not worth listening to past a couple listens. The only song to really care about is Cool Hot Sweet Love. The others are good but not really worth a 5th listen. The production on this album  is great and so are the lyrics but the execution was definitely lacking. I rate this album a 3/5.
