Why you should go to Anime conventions

So I had the chance to go to Otakon this year and I legit had a great time! I got to meet new friends, visited old friends; I cosplayed for the first time, and did many other things as well. After coming back from Otakon I started to think about why I enjoyed going to anime conventions and figured I should share some my reasons. Hopefully people that have never been to an anime conventions will read this and get motivated to go.

1. You meet new people

Now I’m actually rather shy and self-reserved these days but I do get a feeling of satisfaction when I meet people that have similar interest as me and I enjoy meeting new cool people regardless. You’ll meet many people at an anime convention if you’re willing to interact. Going to an anime convention is a great way of getting out of your comfort zone if you’re shy or if you have social anxiety. Sometimes people will randomly speak to you so that forces you to respond back (which may be positive if you’re trying to become more social). You may meet new people that will become your new best friends. You never know.

2. Cosplay/Cosplaying

If you like to dress up and pretend to be something other than yourself then going to an anime convention is for you or you can cosplay as yourself (see what I did there)! Many people like to cosplay as different things ranging from anime characters to pro wrestlers. Believe it or not, the cosplay community is a thing and some people have become famous due to cosplaying. People put a lot of effort into making props and making their own costumes while others buy their costumes and help support cosplay costume makers by doing so.

You can go to a coplay shoot and meet/take photos with fellow cosplayers that are cosplaying as different characters from a certain series or from a different series. Overall cosplaying and seeing people cosplay is very cool, especially when people ask to take a picture of you in your cosplay! You may even make someone’s day if you ask to take a photo of them in their cosplay.

3. Panels

Whenever you come to an anime convention, you will have so many activities that you can choose from (AKA panels). Whether you want to go listen to someone talking about studying abroad or you rather want to attend a panel featuring a favorite voice actor of yours, panels are worth going to. You can run a panel of your own if you would like (guided you follow the convention’s guideline about setting up a panel).

There is so much that you can do at an anime convention. If you have never been to an anime convention then go to one in your area (hopefully you have one that is somewhat close to you). Now if you have the funds then I would recommend going to a bigger anime convention that is well known. Either way you’ll experience something new and that is all that counts.
