Black Superhero: Power Man II

Powerman II: Victor Alverez

Victor Alverez is to Luke Cage as Miles Morales is to Peter Parker. Except Luke isn't dead and Victor has a personality similar to Luke's. Luke Cage is probably my favorite Marvel Hero. It's also nice that the two have past history before Luke even meets Victor. Let's get to the story.

We all know Luke Cage was sent to prison after being framed. In prison he kept his head down and tried to do his time, but he was beaten, repeatedly. Enough so that he got offered a super soldier treatment. He used those abilities to break out of prison and start Heroes for Hire, the rest is history. Now if we go back a little, when Luke was in jail, one of the men that was frequently attacking him was named Shades. Shades eventually was released and moved to New York and started Hoodlums for Hire to spite Luke. He had a visor that absorbed energy from the air around him and shot optic blats. He took frequent beatings until he gave up and got a job.

Shades got a woman named Reina Alverez pregnant. Shade was a deadbeat dad and left Reina for another woman. As a teenager Victor kept trying to reach out to Shade and have a relationship. Shade wanted nothing to do with Victor. One day Bullseye and Daredevil were fighting while Victor was trying to start a relationship with his dad. Bullseye and Daredevil destroyed the building Victor and Shade were in. Shade's visor shattered. This caused the crystals to embed themselves in Victor's skin. He passed out and subconsciously absorbed the life force of everyone in the building as they died and put up a force field protecting him.

He also absorbed the life of K'un-Lun who trained under Iron Fist, Luke Cages's best friend, making him a martial arts expert. Since Luke gave up the name Powerman a long time ago, Victor took the name and declared himself The Hero of Spanish Harlem and began to fight regular criminals after learning he could absorb chi from hits.

Victor continues to rip off Luke Cage's gig by starting a Spanish Heroes for Hire. When Daredevil starts using hand ninjas to patrol the city Victor takes out a group of ninjas after they attack a prostitute. He beats them and they call up Iron Fist to ask about him. Luke Cage and Iron Fist watch him from a distance for a short while. Luke is concerned with "Why does this kid think he's me" and Iron Fist is concerned with "Why is this kid stealing my moves?"

Through their initial interactions Victor learns of Luke Cage's background and that he used to beat his father into submission. Still looking for that father Luke and Victor argue with Victor calling Luke by his real name (Carl). The group helps stop Daredevil and works together still but Luke and Victor still don't like each other. Eventually it leads to a fight where Victor catches Luke off guard with a punch, then Luke puts Victor in the dirt and says something along the lines of "Screw this kid, I'm going home." Iron Fist picks Victor up out the dirt and takes him under his wing. Once Iron Fist has taught him enough he sends Victor off to the Avengers Academy.

Finally Luke gets over his stubbornness and offers Victor an internship at the new Heroes for Hire after he graduates from the Avengers Academy, which he gladly accepts and finally admits Luke was his favorite hero growing up. The two start to bond. I guess you could say Victor starts to look at Luke as a spiritual father of sorts. Luke starts to realize Victor isn't all bad. He's just got a temper issue, like Luke.

Eventually the group has an encounter with Spider-Man (Dr. Octopus Read Superior Spider-Man). He tells them that they shouldn't be accepting money for being heroes. They're just hired thugs. (This is some slick Fox News racism Doc Oct is dropping in calling them thugs because Heroes for Hire is made up of all black people at this point because Iron Fist was off doing Iron Fist things). Rightfully, Victor was mad and stormed off leaving Luke to threaten Spider-Man before leaving. Later Luke invites Victor out to lunch to talk about what had just happened. Victor is mad that they got called thugs for getting paid. Luke pointed out that every active member of The Avengers gets a paycheck from Stark Enterprises. Victor calls this hypocritical and says he wants to do more. Luke takes this as meaning he wants to get out of Heroes for Hire. Luke says he'll shut it down for him. Victor doesn't know if he wants the business shut down and goes to clear his head. Eventually he has a talk with Ava Ayala (also on the team and his best friend).

Thanos' soldiers attack and Victor and Ava rush into battle to see Luke Cage, Falcon (as Captain America), Blade (as Spider Hero), Blue Marvel, Spectrum, and Spider-Oct together. After the battle Luke introduces them as the new team. Victor names them the Mighty Avengers. Of course nobody wants racist undertones Spider-Oct on the team. He considers himself a member and shows up on their missions anyway. He's drops subtle racism all over the place but wants to hang out with a team of all black heroes. It's like Bill O'Reilly getting mad that Al Sharpton won't have dinner with him. That's the story up to where I am. I'm touched, but this better not end with Luke dying.
