Black Superhero: Shadowman

Shadowman: Jack Boniface

The alias and abilities of Shadowman have been passed down the Boniface family for several generations. The abilities came to be when one of the family members made a pact with a shadowy figure. Their goal was to defeat a man known as Master Darque. Darque was one of the greatest necromancers of all time. Josiah Boniface was the current Shadowman. He sacrificed himself in a battle against Draque to end his families curse once and for all. Both men seemed to die in that final encounter. Josiah left a talisman with his wife Helena that would secretly prevent Jack from ever becoming a Shadowman. However, when Jack was eight Helena disappeared and he was sent to a Foster Home. Jack grows up and becomes a curator for the La Nouvelle Orleans Museum of Culture. He still wears the talisman since it's all he has left of the mother he lost and the father he never got to meet. One day he meets a private investigator named James Burke. Jack hires Burke to look into the whereabouts of his parents.

Burke comes back later with detailed reports of Jack's parents. Josiah and Helena were actually infamous criminals. They were both finally arrested for murder but the charges didn't hold up in court and they were released. Jack goes for a walk to digest what he had just heard about his parents. He starts to think back to his child hood. He grows angry at his father for never being around. He remembers his mother telling him that his father was a good man repeatedly and her disappearance. Jack rips the talisman off of his neck and threw it into a river where it was washed away.

The talisman had been preventing demons and evil spirits from sensing Jack. Without the talisman he was attacked by the demon Mr. Twist who worked for Darque. The same man that Jack's father sacrificed himself to stop. Two possessed policemen arrest Jack and drag him to the outskirts of the city. They pull him out of the car and they shoot him at point blank range. Jack is then possessed by a powerful voodoo spirit known as the Loa and becomes the new Shadowman. Alyssa Myles and Dox arrive to help Jack defeat the two possessed cops. Not being used to the Shadowman power, Jack passes out.

Jack wakes up in his bed assuming it was all a bad dream. Alyssa shows up at the museum the next day. She convinces Jack to leave with her. They go to Dox's home. Dox explains magic and Jack's legacy as Shadowman. Before Jack has a chance to understand what he's hearing Mr. Twist teleports into the room. Dox sacrifices himself so that Jack and Alyssa can escape into the Deadside. The Deadside is the opposite of the Liveside. The Liveside is where living people reside and Deadside is where the spirits of the dead reside. As Shadowman, Jack has the ability to enter and exit both of them freely.

I know you enjoyed my explanation but it's not as good as the one Jaunty the talking monkey gave Jack.  Jaunty takes Jack to his father Josiah. Jack's father uses his Sengese Blade to cut off Jack's connection to the Loa. Josiah explains that he's leaving the choice up to Jack. He can either return to his regular life, or he can accept The Loa. Jack sees that Alyssa is being attacked by the spirits of the dead. He decides that the world needs a Shadowman, even if it is a curse. Josiah gives Jack the Sengese Blade and Jack becomes Shadowman to save Alyssa.

Jack and Alyssa leave the Deadside for Jack to fight Mr. Twist. Twist manages to drag Jack into a portal. The portal takes them back to The Deadside. Back in The Deadside Jack is introduced to Darque. Jack uses the power of Shadowman to summon spirits of The Deadside to help him fight. The spirits eat Mr. Twist alive. Shadowman steps in to finish him off. Jack opens a portal to leave with Alyssa and an injured Dox. Meanwhile Darque is trapped and plotting his revenge.
