Review: Grizzzy The Grizzzly - Bipolar

Bipolar is the second album from The Grizzzly.  The album is admittedly a concept album. Without doubt the album attempts to seamlessly fuse hip hop as well as R&B. As with any concept there are some hiccups along the way. But is it worth the listen? The short answer is, yes.

Grizzzly comes from Ohio so while the album does have a Midwest feel, it's not the typical Midwest people are used to hearing from Chicago. If you're coming in expecting the typical "BANG BANG, SOSA" you're not going to get it. What you're going to get is an artist that can be seen as  a more developed, yet not complete Cassidy.

Lyrically Grizzzly isn't the best horse in the stable. This is why I compared him to Cassidy. Similar to Cassidy what Grizzzly lacks in lyrical content his makes up for in punchlines. Seriously, there are a ton of punchlines on almost every track of the album. If you like punchlines stop reading and just go get the album right now because you're going to like it. If not, keep reading. While Grizzzly does have a few tracks that are just pure bragadocious he doesn't fall into that trap of being "just another rapper."

The album is called "Bipolar" and each track represents a different emotion on the spectrum. While some albums wouldn't be able to stick to a concept like that, Grizzly actually manages to do it for the most part. A better idea would have been to name the album "Multiple Personalities." I say this because during the album Grizzly often drifts back and forth from trying to uplift the community to telling us "My whole team winning," often times on the same track. That was my second biggest problem with the album. The biggest problem with this album was the singing. While the album was an attempted fusion of Hip-Hop and R&B it fell flat on the R&B part. I'm just going to be honest. Grizzzly can't sing. He does a lot of things well, but singing just not one of them. His singing is almost painful. Sorry, but it's fact.

One thing that Grizzzly does well is pick instrumentals. He knows what his strengths are and he played to them. He didn't pick

My favorite track on the album is "Mental Freedom." Even with the singing it's still a really nice track. "The Fall" and "Crab Rangoon," the bonus track, are both really nice as well. My least favorite track is probably the title track "Bipolar" I honestly have no clue where he was going with this track.

Scale
  • Lyricism-5
  • Flow-6
  • Production-9
  • Theme-7
  • Replayability-6
  • Individuality-8
Overall the score  is 6.83. Meaning that it's an above average album, that you should listen to even if it's just once. It's provides a different experience than a lot of music that comes out these days.
