Before The Watchmen

The Watchmen is an interesting characters. Originally they were going to be a cast of misfit characters from DC Comics. Eventually that idea was scrapped and new characters had to be created. Some of the DC Characters that were going to be Watchmen in the beginning went on to have successful series or be part of great teams. Some are still DC cast offs. I thought we could take a look at the Watchmen before they were watchmen.

The Question was Rorschach: This one should be pretty obvious. The main difference is the type of mask they wear and Rorschach's personality. Both characters fill the same role. Occasionally fighting but provide information for the most part. They're also big into conspiracies. At the time The Question was a character stuck in limbo but with time he became a Justice Leaguer and held several series of his own. I still prefer Rorschach due to his personality. He's more likely to get violent and his journal entries are way cooler.

Thunderbolt was Ozymandias: I can't even tell you who Thunderbolt is. I had to look him up. He's Batman, except instead of gadgets he can talk to animals and read people's thoughts sometimes. He's also a monk and not a ninja. He's lame. He took out the Aryan Brotherhood. That's the highlight of his career. Ozymandias isn't a monk. He has no plans to ever sacrifice himself. Instead of talking to animals or reading minds once in a blue moon he's a genius every day of the week. He's also a master strategist. He's okay with hand to hand combat but if he gets his weapons it's over. Again The Watchmen take this one.

Peacemaker was The Comedian: The Comedian is a hero with no morals. He'll kill for good or for money. He may or may not have killed Hooded Justice. We don't know. Peacemaker is Vietnam vet. He was crazy before Vietnam because his dad was a Nazi who had the family lie in a concentration camp. His dad committed suicide and the family moved to the United States for a new start. When he came home from Vietnam he was ridiculous. In Vietnam the voice of his father told him to kill everyone in a village. He loves peace so much that he'll kill for it. His words not mine.
He works for the US Government now as a mental insane spy who talks to his dead father and kills people just in case even ones he's not told to. DC Comics takes this one with Peacemaker.

Blue Beetle was Nite Owl: Now when I say Blue Beetle I mean Dan Garrett, Dan Garret (Two versions same character) and Ted Kord. He gets his costume from a variation of the two Dan costumes but his personality and abilities are based on Ted Kord. I say Nite Owl but I mean both versions. Sadly, they're basically the same guy. Either way Nite Owl takes this one because there's 3 versions of Blue Beetle before Jaime Reyes and they're all lame. Nite Owl is just a Batman clone but hey, at least it only took once to get it right.

Nightshade maybe Silk Spectre: Now this one is difficult. The only real similarity they have is that Silk Spectre's costume is a more revealing version of Nigtshade's. They're backgrounds are completely different. They don't share a skill set. Nightshade is a sorceress and Silk Spectre is a gymnast. Silk Spectre has problems with her parents, Nightshade has dead parents. If you know who inspired Silk Spectre leave a comment and let me know.

Captain Atom was Dr. Manhattan: This was the coolest change. Captain Atom used to be the lamest back in the day. The two share the same power set except that Captain Atom can jump between dimensions and Dr. Manhattan can change his size. Here's why it's cool. Captain Atom was a D List hero with a lame look and Dr. Manhattan was a complete redisgn. In fact Manhattan was so cool that Captain Atom was redesigned with Diluster armor which is a combination of his research and alien tech. This made him bright silver and very similar in looks to Manhattan. Manhattan wins this round because he caused a DC character to get a redesign in his honor.
