Top 5 Of The Worst Booking Decisions In Wrestling History

In my two decades of watching wrestling, I have seen plenty of good booking decisions and I have seen some of the worst booking decisions.

Here are top 5 of the worst booking decisions in wrestling history.

1. Allowing A Part-Timer In Brock Lesnar Defeating The Undertaker At WM30 - In all the booking decisions that Vince has made throughout his several decades as a wrestling promoter, but the absolute worst booking decision that he’s ever made in his life was allowing part-timer Brock Lesnar to go over The Undertaker at WM30. The fans would’ve not had an issue with a younger full-time wrestler ending “The Streak”, but the decision by Vince to have The Undertaker’s legendary WM streak so badly angered so many wrestling fans and made many fans back then and still to this day hate Brock Lesnar.

2. Roman Reigns Winning The 2015 Royal Rumble - The 2015 Royal Rumble is one of the most hated PPVs in wrestling history because of not only the young full-time wrestlers being buried by the old washed up part-time wrestlers and fan favorite Daniel Bryan being eliminated in 11 minutes after entering the match, but because a guy who was a very green corporate wrestler that many fans hated in Roman Reigns back then and still today winning the rumble thanks to help from his cousin The Rock. This is definitely the absolute worst and most predictable Royal Rumble match ever.

Note: Daniel Bryan revealed in a recent interview that he warned WWE officials prior to the 2015 Royal Rumble match that “If y’all let Roman Reigns win the rumble, it’s not gonna work out for you guys” and it hasn’t worked out for the WWE since.

3. David Arquette As WCW World Heavyweight Champion - One of the absolute lowest moments of The Dreadful Vince Russo Era in WCW was booking a celebrity in David Arquette to win The WCW World Heavyweight Championship on a televised April 27, 2000 episode of Thunder in a tag match with DDP against Eric Bischoff and Jeff Jarrett that angered many WCW fans who watched at home and were live at the arena when this event went down. As WCW World Heavyweight Champion, he was mostly used as comic relief and only appeared in two shows as champion: May 1st on Nitro and May 7th at Slamboree. This horrible booking decision to let a celebrity win The WCW World Heavyweight Title became one of the infamous moments that would lead to the demise of WCW.

4. Kevin Nash Booking Himself To End Goldberg’s Streak At WCW Starrcade 1998 - In 1998, WCW was at the peak of its popularity thanks mostly to the mega success of The nWo storyline and when WCW Starrcade 1998 came, Kevin Nash (who was head booker of WCW at the time) booked himself to go over younger talent and Goldberg basically steamrolled through the entire WCW roster including members of The nWo Hollywood and Wolfpac that year. Goldberg and Nash were going back and forth until Nash’s real life friend Scott Hall interfered and tazed Goldberg which then allowed Nash to pick up the win over Goldberg in a controversial finish that angered many wrestling fans and viewers because this and The Fingerpoke Of Doom are among the most infamous incidents that would later lead to the demise of WCW.

5. Goldberg Beating Kevin Owens In 22 Seconds At Fastlane 2017 - Prior to Fastlane 2017, Kevin Owens was a young full-time wrestler who was enjoying his reign as Universal Champion until he was thrown into a program with part-timer Goldberg that would become disastrous for Owens when he would become the victim of one of the worst booking decisions in wrestling history at Fastlane 2017 when was booked to drop The Universal Championship To Goldberg in a glorified 22 second squash and this horrible booking decision angered many fans that went on Twitter severely criticizing the bad writing team and would later turn on Goldberg for the rest of his second stint in The WWE. Even though Goldberg see this match as “another win”, many wrestling fans like myself see this as a meaningless win because not only did he not really gain anything from the win, but this would lead to Kevin Owens being buried on the main roster and he hasn’t truly recovered from this since. Of all the wins Goldberg amassed throughout his career, this one over Kevin Owens will always be my least favorite win of his.

The Conclusion - Bad booking often leads to pushes abruptly stopping, certain wrestlers being buried, and making the championship belts meaningless as seen with The WWE nowadays.
