Saint Seiya - Saintia Sho Volume 1 Review: Woman Power

Saint Saintia is a spinoff of the original series Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada. The story follows an all female cast compared to its original. I decided to buy the first volume because of how much I like the original series. I haven't decided to review or buy more volumes but here is the review for Volumes 1.

The story stars Shoko who is the second daughter of a martial arts dojo. Her older sister Kyoko left 5 years prior to study abroad and Kyoko is all Shoko can focus on. Shoko has a weird dream where she's kidnapped and forced to eat an apple but then a Saint comes to her rescue. This actually happens in the first chapter but her savior is none other than her sister.

Kyoko and Mii are so far the only Saintia shown in this volume but more are mentioned. They, like previous Saints, protect Athena from danger. Saori Kido is Athena who is the most powerful of the Graude Foundation. By the end of the volumes one of Arisa's minions, Arisa who is the female Hades of this series, attacks the group and kidnaps Kyoko. Shoko vows to become a Saintia to the surprise of Mii and Saori.

The story is straightforward like the original. There isn't much hidden knowledge or key points but that's not a bad thing, What the story does lack is personality. The dialogue between the characters is very stale. No one stands out with a set personality. Mii and Kyoko's sole purpose is to protect Athena and that's it to them. They are very bland. Athena as well has nothing going for her besides her title. The art is decent but nothing stands out here. The battles are a little confusing as everything is gray or whit with little black except for dialogue bubbles.

The story seems to have potential but right now, based off volume 1, it is very bland with zero substance. I like the concept of an all female Saint team but its not coming together all that well. I'm debating on buying volume 2 but I may buy it before the year is over and review it. So far I rate this a 2/5.
