Nerd Confession: I Don't Care For Star Wars

Star Wars, the film series that fostered a love of sci-fi in the hearts of multiple generations. The films that struck at the core of millions. This is the series that everyone is supposed to love. It doesn't matter who you are, you love Star Wars. What if I told you, I don't care for Star Wars. Would it bother you? I'm not like those weird creeps who claimed adding women in lead roles killed the films or anything like that. I just never cared. Not as a child. Not as an adult. I have no love for the Star Wars films.

As a kid, I never saw much Star Wars, my dad would never tell you but he was a huge Star Trek fan. It was really popular when he was in the marines. So, we're a Star Trek family. Not that I cared much for it either, but I picked up a lot of knowledge just hanging out with him and watching. I didn't know much about Emperor Palpatine, but I could tell you Benjamin Sisko loved to cook and build model ships. The only real exposure was SpikeTV running constant marathons of all the films. My attention span wasn't that high.

I wasn't exactly peer pressured to watch these films either. When I was seven, the first prequel dropped. They were done by the time I was thirteen. They were done for good (at that time anyway). I lived in area that didn't really have a movie theater besides the dollar theater. For those of you who don't know, those are theaters, usually located in or near impoverished areas. These places allow you to see a film for the low price of a dollar, but the films are usually already out of major theaters for six months to a year. A lot of these places have gone out of business for various reasons, but that is what we had when I was growing up. Nobody saw those films or even knew about them because we were kids growing up in the 90s and early 00s so we were playing outside most of the time. I spent most of my summers in the library, because it's basically free daycare, so I didn't watch a lot of TV or see ads for it. Nobody did. You either went to the library after school or did some kind of activity until your parents got off work, that's just the way it is. Thank you Indianapolis Public Libraries.

When I finally did get around to watching all the films shortly before The Force Awakens was released I was underwhelmed. I was told these films were breath taking and awe inspiring. My breath wasn't exactly taken. It was a world where science and magic intermingled but by then I had already been spoiled by things like the Mass Effect series of games. It wasn't really the first time I was seeing this, so I didn't fall in love. My pessimistic adult eyes just wondered how they lived in a world where hundreds of different types of aliens and robots existed, but minorities and women were just in short supply. I counted, there were three black guys in that series who weren't Lando or Mace, only one spoke. If a woman wasn't conversing with Lea, she wasn't really allowed to speak. I didn't have any nostalgia so I probably looked at the movies way too objectively. I had been told they were masterpieces and I didn't see that. They aren't bad films, but they aren't great and I'll likely never watch them again.

I didn't even care for The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. They were just movies for me. I didn't hate them, I didn't fall in love with them. I certainly thought they were serviceable despite a few underwhelming moments. But, I haven't been craving to watch either again. Same goes for Rogue One. I only plan on watching the Han Solo film because I support Donald Glover in everything he does, except a joint album with Chance The Rapper but luckily it hasn't come to that yet.

I don't even love the games. The exceptions are The Force Unleashed, The Force Unleashed II and The Fallen Order. Those were great games on their own. I did multiple playthroughs of both. I just wish there was a third Force Unleased. That's the one time I really felt Jedi and Sith were actually these cool badasses. The rest of the time they were telling us how badass Jedi and Sith were, but then they'd routinely get murdered by robots or each other. Sure you're fast enough to block a laser bullet with a light saber but why do you all keep losing your hands? You aren't fast enough for that?

I don't hate Star Wars, I just don't love it. There's a cool moment here and there but I'm not going out of my way to see the films opening day, week or even month. Unless someone else is taking me to see it, because I'm a good friend, unlike Lando or Han. It just is what it is. Star Wars just doesn't interest me.
