5 Times We Danced To The Sounds of Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a serious problem that many people suffer from. Majority of the world knows drug addiction is a serious problem. Lots of artists cover drugs on all fronts. Addiction, selling, using, getting clean, watching others, not using and so on. It crosses every genre from Johnny Cash to Lil John and John Lennon then back to John Legend. Often times the music is a cry for help and we feel it. Sometimes even relating to our own lives. Other times we dance to it and pay no mind to the lyrics. I've chosen 5 songs we danced to ignoring the drug usage.

D4L - Scotty (Geeked up)

Lyrics: "Help me, help me, help me"

There's lots of fucked up lyrics in this song "I can't eat I can't sleep, all these walls keep looking at me," and "I can't take just one, why not three." It actually inspired this list. I occasionally go back and listen to music from high school, because I guess I'm an old man now. This song was chosen at random by Spotify and I listened to the lyrics. Oh, we all snap danced in 26XL white t-shirts to D4L or Dem Franchise boys depending on your geographic location. The thing is, we didn't notice D4L was calling for help, a lot.

The Weeknd - I Can't Feel My Face

Lyrics: "She'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come, but at least we'll both be beautiful and stay forever young"

This is from the same guy who said "don't believe the rumors bitch, I'm still a user," in response to people thinking he had gotten clean. I worry about The Weeknd, a lot. I like his music a lot but I can't turn it off long enough to arrange an intervention for him. Seriously, there's a lot of drug references in his music and I fear he could be the Bobby Brown of my generation. Please, don't be Bobby. My working theory is that every love song by The Weeknd is about drugs. It's that simple and I love it. Kiss Land, code for Cocaine Land. The Hills, more like bumps. House of Balloons? You already know.

Future - Thought it Was A Drought

Lyrics: "Bitch, I'mma choose the dirty over you"

I mean, that sums it up right there. You have to be an addict if you decide that you'd rather continue using instead of remaining in a stable relationship. It's not like that's the only drug reference in his music, by a long shot. I just find it so funny because the line comes at a random moment in the song. It's like he lost his train of thought and randomly decided to tell her he liked drugs more than her. From what I hear he also likes drugs more than his kids too. I for one am glad Russell is gonna be a drug free role model. Future says he's not a drug addict and it's all for show, but that's what addicts say.

Amy Winehouse - Rehab

Lyric: "They try to make me go to rehab, I said no no no"

I miss Amy Winehouse. I really liked her music. Sadly she died of a drug overdose because the people that were supposed to be helping her weren't. Nobody made sure she got treatment, because the checks kept clearing and they got paid. There were days when a power couple of Nas and Amy Winehouse was a possibility. With the two of them penning songs about each other, spending copious amounts of time together. Sadly that never happened because we danced along to her melodies the same way those around her did.

Rick James - Mary Jane

Lyrics: "I'm in love with Mary Jane, she is my main thang"

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. This song is about weed, but we're not gonna act like our parents didn't dance through it. If someone had got him then he wouldn't have been doing cocaine. He wouldn't have been fighting Charlie in the club. Because we danced all through this song his addictions just grew to harder drugs. Damn, we fucked up.

  1. If you were going to choose a Future songs about drugs you could've done way better. Also please stop pushing the rhetoric that he loves drugs more than his kids.

  2. Cannabis is NOT the reason Rick James got addicted to cocaine. Addiction (food, drugs, alcohol) is a physical, mental and environmental condition.
