Sometimes Bad Music is Good

Music is a special thing. It has the ability to soothe the soul and change your entire outlook on things. That's good music but lets be honest there's more bad music than there is good music. However, sometimes bad music can be good music. I know that sounds confusing but follow me on this. I'm a music snob, I'll admit. Bad music is my secret addiction and sometimes you just need that bad music so you can be good mentally.

When I say the music is bad, I mean it's bad all around. The beat is likely garbage or a rip off of something more famous. The rapper is 100% garbage in all categories. If you thought music on the radio was problematic, you haven't heard anything yet. This music is so problematic it'll get a few Twitter threads. But you'll dance to it anyway in your car because it makes you feel good.

I don't know a damn thing about Cardi B. I still know all the words to "Bodak Yellow." It's a funny song. She's a funny person. There's so many threads about how she's problematic to some for calling women roaches. She's problematic to others because she used to be a stripper. All I know is she's a really funny person, she pays her momma's bills and she ain't gotta dance no more because she make money move. Also, she went to college, she didn't graduate, but she was there bro.

Look, not all bad music can be so bad it's good. That's just not the way this works. Recently I've found myself listening to Lil Yachty a lot. Every last song is bad. It's horrible music all around. The thing is, he makes a lot of really happy sounding songs. You should listen to the song "Marmalade," by Lil Yachty and Macklemore. I can't even hate the song because it's just so happy sounding. I don't even know what they're rapping about but it's cool. I imagine this is how people who listen to K-Pop but don't speak Korean feel.

Then there's rappers like Ugly God or Savagerealm. They're just saying stupid stuff with no meaning behind it because it's funny. Who makes a song about why you should smoke Black and Milds, or masturbating aggressively? You can listen to this and say it's problematic because the word bitch is thrown around a lot but, it's still funny. Also, can you really say anything with lyrics "My bitch name is Dillion but he not a nigga." Clearly, this is just some stuff thrown together. It's trash but it's funny and makes you feel good.

I will spend all day debating who the best lyricist is with you and I can run circles around most people with my knowledge of hip hop history. But, I'm not going to write off an artist because that's not their main demographic. If these people are just making fun music and not pretending they're the best at it, then why should there a be a problem? It's not like they're claiming to be the best ever and dropping bars like "chain so big they call me Chaining Tatum."

We need to loosen up and stop expecting everyone to do one kind of Hip Hop. Everyone isn't going to be a Kendrick Lamar, or J. Cole. There's going to be Drake and Big Sean. Hip hop has always been this way, so let's stop the hate. It's a shame Chance The Rapper tries to put a gospel choir in everything. But, is it any worse than Tech N9ne in the 00s putting opera in everything. Sure Ugly God makes funny songs, is it any different than Afroman, or even Will Smith rapping how he could beat Mike Tyson? There's an issue with Young Thug wearing a dress, but look at some of those rappers from the 70s and 80s, they were wearing leather cod pieces and nobody had an issue. We're also not going to pretend everyone dropping music in the 90s was dropping incredible music otherwise we'd be here all month naming bad rappers.

It just doesn't make sense to write off entire subgenres of Hip Hop because you deem them to be unenjoyable. Sorry you don't like "Bodak Yellow," but I didn't really care for "My Neck My Back," and it might actually be the worse song. Bad music can be good when it gives you a chance to relax and let off some steam. I love Nas, but I can't listen to Nas all day every day. If I did I'd be somewhere on a street corner in fatigues trying to create a problack army to overthrow the United States government. But, that is crazy, so I'm going to listen to some bad music and relax after a long day of work.
