Anime Review: 91 Days

91 days came to me as a recommendation for a short anime so I decided to take a look and see what it was about. The anime takes place in the small town of Lawless, Illinois and centers around the mob. This also takes place during prohibition where liquor running was big business that meant big money.

The series follows Avilio Bruno, a small time gangster moving up the ranks in the mob while trying to get revenge for his family. His best friend Corteo is a bootlegger who makes the best alcohol in the state named Lawless Heaven. He seeks revenge on the Vanetti Family while helping them break free of control from the Orco Family and impress the Chicago Gallasia Family. Without giving anything away there's a lot of murder. It's essentially the Sopranos of anime.

Characters aren't the greatest all around but they're interesting. They're all horrible people, except Cortero. Avilio has a reason to be horrible but he goes above and beyond what is required. Avilio is almost emotionless with the exception of two scenes. Fango is probably the weirdest and one of the few characters with any real development. He's an interesting character that ranges from caring mob boss to deranged lunatic.

The animation isn't exactly the greatest. There are moments where characters are supposed to be drinking coffee and they just show a still image where the cup doesn't touch their lips. It's hilariously bad at some moments. The same can be said for the voice acting, actually the voice acting is worse. I switched from dubs to subs after three episodes then switched back because it was just as bad in the subs. There's basically no emotion for most of the characters and they all sound monotone through most of the anime. The voice acting is really the low point of this and they had to be trying, because the animation isn't top of the line at all. Those would be the two biggest flaws of the series, if it weren't for the ending.

It seems like they were expecting a second season and when they didn't get one, they decided to just kill everyone. Main characters were dying off screen. People just introduced were dying for no reason. Every main character except for one dies and it's implied that he dies off screen too. I get it, the mob doesn't have happy endings for anyone. That's okay, it's just weird the way they chose to kill some of the people. I'm going to spoil the ending now, so skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want to be spoiled. Cortero kills Fango, easily after all these hardened killers failed. Fango didn't even fight back. He just yelled. Then when Avillio died they went on a month long road trip and a walk on the beech first. It made no sense. Why not just kill him in the back of the car? Alright, spoilers over.

Even with the flaws I really enjoyed the anime until the last 4 episodes when I wondered what the hell was going on and why things were moving so fast. Even then the only episode I had any serious issue with other than pacing was the finale which left me scratching my head and confused more than satisfied. The last episode literally features a montage of a road trip to the credits theme. I thought it was over and saw there was almost 15 minutes left in the episode. Until that last episode it really is enjoyable if you don't mind a slow and methodical pace.
