The Confederate and 5 More Alternate Timeline Shows HBO Can Produce

HBO recently announced plans for a new series from the duo of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss best known for their work on Game of Thrones. The show will be called Confederate and will take place in an alternate timeline. The world will be based on the concept of the Confederate States of America winning the United States Civil War. Personally I thought this was a horrible idea that's already been done way too many times. You can't really do a show like this without admitting that racism broke the country apart because the South really wanted slaves or pretending it wasn't about slaves but economics. Doesn't matter, I won't be watching anyway. Still, it got me thinking. What other alternate timeline shows could HBO release? So I sat down, leaned back in my chair and thought about all the history classes I took and I made a list.

1. Provisional: How the IRA Broke Free

This one takes place in Northern Ireland. The idea behind this is that the Provisional Irish Republican Army succeeded in there attempt to remove Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom. Except, for this one I'd like to take a science fiction turn. Season one sees them fighting in The Long War but then they win in the second season. What if they only succeeded because they managed to break Northern Ireland apart from the rest of Ireland? Hear me out on this, they take their giant piece of land and they equip it with some kind of futuristic engines and it moves around the world like a boat. However a civil war begins to arise because the people of Donegal were satisfied with being part of the UK but they ended up as part of this new moving island. Someone get on this.

2. Rebellion: Nat Turner Lets Freedom Ring

Dogs bark as a man flees through a forest, his only light comes from the moon shining down. He chest hurts as he climbs a tree hoping for momentary freedom from the dogs. He'd already felt the bite of that beast tonight. Others would have surrendered but he was dedicated to his cause. He retrieves a small firework and a match from his pocket. His hand shakes as he lights it and fires it off into the air signalling his location to the others. It's at that moment the Nate Turner Freedom Force emerges from the woods. The dog stops barking and flees as it can sense the danger. The massive group surrounds the plantation ready to do what they had done so many times before. So the idea behind this one is that Nat Turner's Rebellion wasn't just a few days, but a few years and he grew to be a powerful political force. Eventually sparking a Civil War and bringing an end to slavery decades earlier.

3. Colony: Taking Back Their Home's

Picture this, colonialism is going as planned in Africa. Fake leaders have been installed, country lines had been drawn. But suddenly secrets begin to spread behind the backs of the colonizers. The indigenous people of Africa begin communicating through secret messages. Suddenly one day the Mau Mau Uprising begins and is the signal for others to pick up arms and fight back. Battles break out across the continent as people seek to reclaim their land from invaders. The show could focus on how Africa was handling the battles and would develop after a successful coup. Would we end up with something like the fictional world of Wakanda where technology mixes with ancient tradition?

4. Atomic: When Mutations Occur

This one takes place in Japan and eventually the rest of the world. What if the bombs the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki didn't just kill people. What if 17% of people who died in those bombs had actually lived and been granted super powers. We'll take the liberal number of 226,000 total deaths. What if it was only 187,580 deaths instead? But the other 38,420 people woke up with some kind of mutant powers. Some could transform, others could fly, control fire, use telepathy and so on. Does Japan go on with a new determination for world domination? You'd have to tune in to find out.

5. Sieg Heil: Genocidal Homicidal Maniacs

What if Hitler won. Do you know how fucked up the world would be? Genocides would be an every day thing. But, if we're just doing shows of alternate timelines where horrible people got their way, why not. First, there'd be no Jewish people left because you know how Germany felt about Jewish people at the time. Second, the LGBTQ community would be in shambles because Hitler killed plenty of lesbians and gay men, but only the gay men he considered feminine. Other gay men quickly rose through the ranks in the military because they were seen as having nothing left to lose or gone. Black people would likely be shipped back to Africa because he essentially felt black people were a separate species who needed their own space. Congratulations to Europe, you're now German. Congratulations to Asia and North America, you're now Japanese. Except you Canadians, you're German now because Canada was on of the first countries to declare war on Germany and Hitler wanted revenge. This show wouldn't be enjoyable. The only people watching would be people who enjoy "torture porn," or television that is depressing for the sake of being depressing.

You see how ridiculous these sound? That's what you want HBO. The world is not a great place right now but somehow it's still one of the better outcomes. There's a lot of places where things could have went the other way and it would be much worse today. Sure there are ways it could have been better but this is not one of them. If MLK and JFK weren't assassinated America really would be something special. But, if the Cold War had turned into a hot one we probably would have bombed ourselves back to the stone age if not extinction. Confederate is a show that's described as glorifying the worst case scenario. The Confederates would have won, slavery would still be the top economy pusher in 2017 and it'll all be good. I'm not even going to sit down and give this one a chance.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet. You can also check out his playthrough of Sleeping Dogs or Skyrim
