One of the biggest arguments in anime is that Subbed Anime, anime with English or any language subtitles, are superior to Dubbed Anime, anime that is voiced in a language other than its original dialect. Its an ongoing war that sometimes defines why an anime is trash or godly. There is no in between. I don't care if the series is Dubbed or Subbed, I just hope its good but today I'll explain why Dubs are trash.
There are plenty of great dubbed anime. Yu Yu Hakusho Gurren Lagann, and the best dub, Cowboy Bebop. But with every great dub, there are a load of shitty dubs. Rosario Vampire, Hunter x Hunter, and the god awful 4Kids One Piece dub. But what makes a dub bad? The main reason why most people hate dubbed anime is because the voice actors are trash. When watching anime subbed most voices sound as if that character would sound like that. The voices fit, but in dubs that's not the case. Some times it feels as though the studio dubbing the anime just picks whoever is around or the most popular at the time but regardless most of the voices don't match, in some cases they are cringe worthy.
Nagenda from Akame ga Kill's English dubbed voice sounds underwhelming character of her stature. Nagenda is the leader of Night Raid and has a robotic arm, her character is on the lines of badass. There is no reason she should sound so bland. Her Japanese voice has a ton of confidence that matches her personality and status. And that is the main problem with dubs. The voice actors either don't know how to act, or don't care. There is no character in their voice to make us believe in the characters they are portraying. The reason we all love Cowboy Bebop so much is because those voice actors were really fucking good. Those actors were perfect for those roles.
It is extremely hard to enjoy dubs when it seems the voice actors themselves don't care about the anime. They make characters come off as lackluster, lame, or in most cases they make the characters sound retarded (Kite in the 1999 HxH dub). Some of the greatest scenes in the anime have become watered down because of the shitty voice acting. The voice acting is the main reason people don't like dubs. It's not always because they are anime elitist or they're weebs, the voice acting is atrocious.

Studio Ghibli films are maybe one of the few decent dubs out there, because Miyazaki actually sits through auditions and handpicks his candidates. All other dubs are trash. Very few good one out there.

ANIME IS JAPANESE ANIMATION produced by Japan before it's exported to overseas countries. I will admit that some dubs are trash but I don't like pausing the show to read every double line of text every 30 seconds lol. if they wanted to make more money they would just make good dubbed shows for all countries where anime is popular
ReplyDeleteTbh I do think there are some bad dubs out there but as of late, dubs have started getting better especially in the new modern era of anime.
ReplyDeleteFor someone like me who has ADHD and can't concentrate on both the action that's going off plus the subtitles of what's being said it's hard to enjoy anime subbed because I have to watch the same episode twice sometimes to catch everything.
I have started noticing alot of the same VA's coming into the top anime lists for dubs, that genuinely care about the show's they're working on and doing the characters justice compared to others. I will admit though there are a few people I'd change in a few animes and anything from the 90's to the early 00's is hard to watch with how bad some actors performances are.
