Six Ongoing Image Comic Series You Should Be Reading

You probably know Weekly Shounen Jump. You know Marvel and DC too. You may have heard of Image Comics but chances are the idea of comic books being anything other than heroes in tights fighting villains was absurd to you. Maybe you’re looking for contained content that is led by one creative team; instead of seeing tons of versions and variations of the same character. Tired of having to buy issues of characters you don’t care about just to experience a comic book event?

Image Comics is the answer. Image Comics was founded in 1992 by various creative minds that wanted to create a place artists and writers could create and control their own material. On this site I have posted a review and recommendation for Deadly Class and Rat Queen already which I highly recommend, so check those out. Other than those two, here are six ongoing Image series you need to pick up:

Rocket Girl – Written by Brandon Montclare and drawn by Amy Reeder, Rocket Girl is about a futuristic teenager police officer going back in time to stop something terrible from happening. The story jumps from present to future. The artwork is compelling and vibrant.

Wayward – Writer Jim Zub, the artists are Steve Cummings and John Rauch. Wayward is a supernatural story of a teenager who moves to Japan and gets caught up in weird mystical world. An American manga of sorts, it’s very colorful and expressive.

Trees - Created by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard, Trees is what I like to call pre or mid apocalyptic. Aliens drop these massive “Trees” all over the world and they have no regard for the planet or humanity. Story takes place ten years after their arrival. Powerful themes and has lots of depth.

The Wicked + The Divine - By creative team Kieron Gille, Jamie McKelvie, Clayton Cowles and Matt Wilson. The Wicked + The Divine centers around reincarnated deities known as the Pantheon. They are reborn every 90 years and within two years, they will die. The artwork is incredible and the characters are beautiful.

Saga – A space fantasy drawn by Fiona Staples and written by Brian K. Vaughan. Two people from opposing sides of a galactic war fall in love, have a child and now must run from both sides of the war. A great space epic that has some obvious Star Wars influence. Contains solid storytelling and good artwork.

Morning Glories – Created by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma. Morning Glories Academy is the world’s most prestigious school, but is truly a place full where the students and physically and psychologically tortured. The series deals with uncovering the occult and supernatural, told from the various perspectives of the main cast as they try to not die. Should be praised for its characters, pacing and extremely compelling mystery.

Honorable mention: Y the Last Man (completed) – Seemingly out of nowhere, every single man in the world suddenly dies except for one. What would you do if you were the last man on Earth? Made by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. This series is completed however and from Vertigo (DC), not Image Comics.

Marvel and DC are undoubtedly the forerunners and probably the first two publishing companies that pop into people’s minds when they think of a comic book. But don’t sleep on Image Comics; they have lots of good content just waiting to be discovered.
