Explaining Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is one of the longest running manga in existence. It’s written and drawn by Araki Hirohiko and for years it has been a renowned manga respected by many. Originally, it was a shounen manga published in Weekly Shounen Jump but has now become a seinen manga published by Ultra Jump.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a multi-generational story centering around the misadventures of the Joestar Family; a noble family with English roots. It’s divided into eight parts, each part focusing on a different descendant. Each part features a whole new cast of protagonists, antagonists and a new setting. Even the genres are different; part one is plays out like a horror story whereas part five is more of an Italian mobster drama.

Each member of the Joestar bloodline has a star shaped birth mark near their shoulder blade. The varying eras and different countries also produce radically different main characters. The first Joestar – Jonathan - is a gentleman and honourable. Joseph Joestar, however, is a lazy trickster and cheat with a heart of gold. Then you have Jotaro who’s a violent delinquent with little to no respect.

Jojo is a series that does away with fillers. The series is all about the action and doesn't give a crap about pandering to sex appeal. It’s different from your typical shounen: employing distinct art styles, the most epic game of rock, paper, scissors you’ll ever see and even a wager for your soul over an intense video game; the series has a lot of originality and creativity.

The first two parts of Jojo have the characters fight with something called “Sendo”, or “Hamon (Ripple). Hamon is essentially the Jojo universe’s equivalent to energy, chi, chakra or whatever other terms you prefer. After part two they introduce the series staple supernatural ability which they call “Stands.” Stands are the physical manifestation of the user’s psyche, almost exactly like a Persona for you Atlus fans out there (except Jojo came first). Stand battles are the heart-and-soul of Jojo and once Araki fully understood what he wanted and where he wanted to go with Stands, he was able to create some awesome, strategic battles where the combatants use brilliant tactics.

The character designs are manifestly ridiculous and over-the-top. The character personalities are all also over the top and so are the fight scenes. Jojo is definitely bizarre but it’s entertaining; you never know what weird character will be introduced and what kind of ability they’ll have, which adds to the series excitement.

In conclusion, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is, in fact, weird but it’s also extremely hype and fun. You can tell Araki enjoys creating the series. You can read all eight parts of Jojo or watch the anime which has parts one to three animated by David Productions. They did a phenomenal job staying true to the manga and making the anime as awesome as possible. Now show the world your best pose.
