Are Cartoons Good Again?

It’s no secret that cartoons just aren’t what they used to be. And if we’re being completely honest, they’ve been pretty horrible for a while; until the year 2010 that is. While most cartoons are childish drivel, ever since 2010 some quality cartoons have been coming out. Whether these are web series or aired on TV, here are some cartoons you should give a try.

Star vs the Forces of Evil: Star Butterfly is a magical princess from a dimension called Mewni. Certain circumstances cause her to move to Earth with Marco Diaz and his family. Together they fight off monsters trying to steal Star’s wand and deal with every day high school life. A quirky show that’s both heartwarming and charming.

Regular Show: Mordecai (a blue jay) and Rigby (a raccoon) are 23 year olds who work as park groundkeepers. Every day they slack off and get sucked into crazy surreal shenanigans. Show also focuses on the other park employees as they live out, not so regular lives. Regular Show should be praised for its great pacing and creativity.

Steven Universe: This is the coming of age story of Steven Universe, a magical boy who lives with powerful alien warriors called the Crystal Gems. Steven inherited the crystal power of his late mother and must fight alongside the Gems to keep Beach City and Earth safe. Has fantastic story building and stunning visuals.

Adventure Time: The adventures of Finn the last human and Jake the magical dog. This story takes place in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo: a strange world with candy people, monsters, multiple dimensions and crazy ice wizards. Adventure Time is a deceptively deep show with powerful themes of love, friendship and moral obligations. The cast and music are also awesome.

Bee and Puppycat: Bee is a young adult who can’t hold a steady job. On her way home from being fired, a strange doglike cat falls from the sky and she takes it home. This, “Puppycat” would transport Bee to another dimension where a being named Tempbot gives them supernatural temp jobs for money. Bee is a great character and the show has a certain likable weirdness to it.

Gravity Falls: Dipper and Mabel go to visit their great uncle Stan in a small town in the woods called Gravity Falls. What would have seemed to be a boring summer to look forward to, Dipper and Mabel quickly realize there is nothing normal about Gravity Falls and every day they get caught up in some bizarre escapade. A seriously funny show that turns out to have a surprisingly good overarching plot.

Over the Garden Wall: Wirt and Greg, two half-brothers get lost in the woods called the Unknown. They’re trying to find their way back home. The Unknown is a magic forest with strange beings and unknown dangers. Will the two brothers ever make it back home? This show is poetic and creepy but still manages to be humorous yet also deep.

Honorable mentions: Archer and Rick and Morty: Mature adult cartoons with themes for older audiences. Archer is about a secret agency called ISIS and their not so smart intelligence agency. Rick and Morty is about the insane adventures of Morty and his evil genius, alcoholic grandfather Rick throughout time and space. Both these shows are HILARIOUS.

There are some other great shows like the Amazing World of Gumball and Star Wars Rebels that have also come out recently that are really good. Powerpuff Girls and Reboot are also coming back. Could we possibly be seeing a return of solid cartoons? Here’s to hoping for more quality cartoons to come out for the next couple of years but in the meantime check out these toons!
