We Did Not Deserve Cherry Bomb

In 2015 Tyler The Creator released his 3rd Studio Album Cherry Bomb. Now this album is fairly different from his previous work in terms of production, lyrics and even the overall theme. Now Tyler's production has always been eerie and not of a typical hip hop album. Tyler's production is usually alternative taking influences from European artists. On Cherry Bomb the production didn't stray too far from Tyler's usual work but you can definitely hear the difference.

Lyrically Tyler has talked about a slew of topics ranging from love songs, stories of his dad and his relationship with the rest of his family, death, the devil, his influence in music and the people that love his work as well as some random shit. As a Tyler fan, you pretty much know that he has some great songs about an actual topic and great songs about nothing like Trashwang or Bitch Suck Dick. On Wolf we saw Tyler take a turn on the song 48 where he talks from the perspective of a drug dealer and the effects it has on the community.

I loved Wolf when it came out, but after the listening to it I could tell Tyler was moving in a different direction with his music. He spoke less about his father, rape, and tons of that other nonsense Tyler is known for but he was making more songs about love and his current situation in life. I wasn't actually expecting Tyler to release another album. Now here's the reason why we didn't deserve Cherry Bomb.

Fans expected an album like Wolf, like Goblin, like Bastard but we got something completely different. We got album that is clearly geared towards the production and overall feel but we wanted something like his previous albums. When I first listened to the album the only songs I liked were "Deathcamp", "Fucking Young/Perfect" and "Smuckers" so I never listened to the album besides those tracks. Here we are in 2017 and I damn near listen to this album on a regular. After getting passed my bias of what I wanted the album to be, I was able to listen to the album for what it is.

Cherry Bomb is an album for the person who loves chill music and wants to vibe to an album with good production, some nice lyrics, and an overall positive vibe. I can put this album on at any time of the day while I'm driving, sleeping, or trying to get work done. If you stop looking at Cherry Bomb as a Tyler album trying to be a Tyler album but instead looked at it as a Producer album, you'll enjoy this a lot more. Cherry  Bomb is a step in a different direction for Tyler as a producer and not a hype rapper. We ere not ready for Cherry Bomb but hopefully what ever Tyler drops n ext, we may be more accepting of it.

  1. I've loved this album to death since it first came out and was so sad when everyone hated it. Just like you wrote about, they all expected Wolf 2.0 or like a Wolf & Bastard fusion. I felt like I was the only one who saw the lane he was taking with this at first. But once I got them to remove those expectations, they fucked with it. It's the true way to enjoy this album and all music in general so this was a great piece bro.
