Marvel's Secret Empire - Glorifying Nazis and Sacrificing Reality

Marvel's Secret Empire story sees around a dozen heroes and villains joining up with Steve Rogers as an agent of Hydra. The group has a new plan for white supremacy and control of the United States. Recently two sets of variant covers featuring heroes and villains in new Hydra themed costumes. I know you may be thinking that this could just be fictional covers of things that won't necessarily happen. However, Marvel issued a press release along with these cover stating:
Bring On The Bad Guys With The Villains of SECRET EMPIRE!
New York, NY—March 3rd, 2017 — Things are heating up in the Marvel Universe as the threat of the Secret Empire looms. As heroes far and wide stand united against Hydra’s tyranny, the villains have assembled their own forces! Today, Marvel is pleased to reveal the first five villains to be featured – Hydra’s secret weapons in the war against the super heroes! Illustrated by artist Dan Mora (Klaus) each of these images will be released as variant covers, coming to different issues of the blockbuster Secret Empire event series!
There you have it, these aren't just covers. This part of the story and these heroes will be joining Hydra. After looking that heroes and villains of Hydra I can't help but think, what the star spangled fuck are they thinking? Sure some of these Hydra villains maker perfect sense. Baron Zemos? He's been a Nazi since day one. Sure, a few of these could make sense. Steve Rogers is Captain America, but he's also a Nazi's wet dream, the perfect specimen of what an Aryan should be. Crossbones? Sure, he just works for the highest bidder, if Hydra has money, he's got bullets. But one of these is fucking ridiculous.

One of the villains representing Hydra is Max Eisenhardt better known as Magneto. Why is this choice so atrocious? Well, you see Magneto is a Jewish Holocaust survivor who lost both of his parents in a concentration camp when he was young. As an adult Magneto has beaten Red Skull to death with his bare hands, not once but twice. He's also locked Red Skull in a nuclear shelter with his magnetism so that he couldn't escape and would starve to death. On top of that he's faced off with the Nazi on numerous occasions putting an end to their schemes. But wait, there's another reason this is disgustingly ridiculous. One of Steve and Hydra's plans is concentration camps for mutants. Magneto has been a good guy and a bad guy but one thing remains the same his goal. That goal is to end the persecution of mutants and he damn sure isn't going to allow them to go into concentration camps because that is certainly persecution of mutants.

But, can we talk about putting the heroes in Hydra costumes for covers is also just glorifying the Nazis? These characters aren't even going to be working for Hydra but put them in Hydra costumes anyway because Hydra is cool right? All the characters they chose wouldn't even make sense for Hydra. Amadeus Cho for example, really good friends with Miles Morales, Khamala Khan, and Sam Alexander, also a mentor of sorts for Moon Girl. Amadeus is also Asian and I could be wrong but I don't think Nazis are big fans of Asian people either, beyond World War II when they offered help.

I get it, Neo-Nazis are all the rage right now because they switched their name to Alt-Right. But, I don't want to see heroes dressed as Nazis just because. There's not even a story line for these like with Steve Rogers, they're just putting Spider-Man and Carol Danvers in Hydra uniforms because they can and people will buy it because Nazis are totally radical.

We get it, Nazis are hot right now and you want to capitalize. Remember when Marvel turned a whole universe into zombies because zombies were hot? It's similar to that right? Just turn everyone into Nazis because Nazis are in the news a lot now? IT'S NOT THE SAME THING. What the hell is wrong with them? Nazis are not cool, stop trying to make them cool. They're villains, not just in your stories but in real life. All villains, like Magneto, aren't Nazis. But, all Nazis are villains. It's a simple concept that we shouldn't have to explore.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet. You can also check out his playthrough of Sleeping Dogs or Skyrim

  1. Might be deeper than you think. Maybe there is truth to the fiction. The comic and the company that owns it may be playing their part in conditioning minds for a particular agenda. Nazis aren't all the rage today for nothing.
