Cyclops: The Hero Mutants Deserve

The Mutants have always needed a hero, that's just the way it is. From the time their existence was revealed in the Marvel Universe, they've been the target of hate. The Mutants always needed a hero to stand against that hate in hopes of creating a peaceful tomorrow. In the past Mutants have followed; Apocalypse who led them to war in pursuit of control, Charles Xavier who led to needless sacrifices in pursuit of peace, and Magneto who led them through hellfire and brimstone in hopes of a Mutant utopia. Despite these exceptionally powerful people leading them, it never seemed to work out in the end. The most recent leader that Mutants followed was Scott Summers, better known to the world as Cyclops. He was the hero mutants deserved.

Cyclops did something other mutant leaders don't really do. He always put mutants first, before anything else. Look at the teams other mutant leaders have been part of. Magneto and the League of Supervillains, Xavier and the Illuminati, Wolverine and the Avengers, the list goes on. But, not Cyclops. Every team he has ever been a part of has been a spin off of The X-Men or a team made of rogue mutants. The one exception is Ironman's future team, which is from an alternate future that may not ever exist. Cyclops never left mutants behind for anything. He's always put Mutants before anything else even when people like Xavier and Wolverine left the Mutants behind for alternate goals.

The difference that separates Cyclops from someone like Xavier or Storm is that he's willing to be the villain. I'm not talking about full blown terrorism or conquest like Apocalypse. He's willing to go further than they would. He's willing to stand against Avengers, Fantastic 4, Inhumans, or any other heroes as long as it was for mutants to have a brighter future. Again, Cyclops putting mutants before anything else when other leaders would not even if it made him the bad guy.

Cyclops was also a realest. Magneto and Xavier were men of ideals. They believed and acted based on ideas. Xavier acted on the idea that deep down humans were good people. Magneto operated on the basis that humans innately evil. Cyclops moves based on reality, there are good and bad people, Mutants and Inhumans. He never based a plan on what he thought an enemy do. He based his plans only on what he knew and what the enemies already did.

There's one more thing that makes him the leader and hero mutants deserved. It's because he died fighting for what he believed in. No he didn't literally die in a war to protect mutants. Instead he died trying to gather information on the Terrigen mists hoping to enact a plan that would make them harmless to mutants. He put his own life on the line for that information. Xavier would always send team after team of X-Men into battle, often including Cyclops in those teams. But, he would never go into battle himself unless he was sure there would be no danger. Magento goes to fight himself, but only against people he knows he can beat. If he can't win he retreats.

There's a reason Mutants were so eager to follow Cyclops. Time and time again they saw him putting his life on the line for them. Even if Mutants like Storm didn't agree with his methods, they respected his decisions and allowed him to move with no resistance. They did this because they know Cyclops would give everything he had for mutants including his life. Cyclops is the hero mutants deserved.

  1. I agree with this.

As an african american it's very inspiring to see the lengths he would go to for his people.

    1. The man fought to the death for his people and kept fighting even after he death, until he died a second time.

  2. I have always like Cyclops even though it seems Bendis and a few other writers really disliked the character with the way they always seemed to crap on him. There so much story potential still left untapped with the character.

    1. I'm just waiting for his inevitable comeback where people realize he was actually the hero they were looking for.

  3. If Kevin Feige is smart (and let's be honest, he is)... the MCU's mutants will have Cyclops be the "legit face" of MutantKind.
