The Get Down: Episode 5 - You Have Wings, Learn To Fly

While Fuerte ignores Jackie for a moment to argue with Cruz, Jackie gets hit with inspiration. He asks if a man walks in the light of God, but hates his brother is he not still in darkness. He takes a gospel song Mylene sang and gives a disco style accompanied by the band. Then he convinces Regina and Yolanda to harmonize background vocals. He even gets Pastor Cruz on board by stating that the disco is full of sinners and they go there to be set free and they want to be saved. So they're mixing disco with gospel and Puerto Rican Flavor. Everyone likes the song and it's all happy, he even convinces Cruz to let them use the church to record.

Herc asks if onions and mustard means anything to Boo-Boo and he says he likes it on his hotdogs. So Herc has a hotdog made for Boo-Boo. He's told that they would rather everyone eat vegetarian but if they were going to eat meat it would be all beef franks. He explains that when he started this, it was just a way for family and friends to come together and celebrate with no violence. Boo-Boo tries to explain but the crowd gets mad and Herc calms them down. Zeke kicks some rhymes about what happened and reveals that one of Herc's trusted friends really was the bootlegger. Herc keeps his calm demeanor and tells his goons to fuck him up, outside because the party goers don't need to see that. Herc gives some more knowledge.

He stated when he was growing up you didn't have a choice but to fight with fist. He goes back to stating that music is his way to peace and they shouldn't be using their fists to fight each other. This is his DJ philosophy, music brings peace. He suggests a DJ battle between the Infaous 3 and The Get Down Brothers to solve their problems instead, but only if Flash allows it by unbanning the boys, because there's respect between the two. They agree and head home.

Shaolin and Zeke go see Flash but the goons won't let them in until Flash tells them to. Then he tells the goons to leave because they got what they never could. Zeke apologizes to Flash and Flash accepts, then he tells Zeke leave and we get Flash's philosophy on DJing.

Flash believes that music can give you anything that you want in the world even if you came from nothing. However, he believes that for music to give you everything you need to give music your whole soul. He tells Shaolin he forgives the crew because they don't know any better. He states that not only is Shaolin the oldest, but he's also the DJ and that makes him their leader. They're his wings and he has to control his wings. Shaolin tells Flash he won't let them down and takes off.

Back at home Zeke's aunt and teacher Ms. Green are just tearing into him for missing the internship and talking about he wants to be a no good nigga like the rest of the Bronx. They're really just tearing down his life. Then his uncle comes in and sits down a picture of Zeke's mother. Zeke's aunt says it's not the time for that. Zeke's uncle says "I never knew your mother. I do know she wanted more for you. I never had to read a book a week like you and she taught you to play piano because she wanted you to be better than this. You have to be a leader." Zeke gets up and runs out inspired by his uncle's words.

Zeke sits and Herman Guns office until he's leaving and demands to speak with him. He calls Herman out for betraying the people to make money and states the internship is for Herman to get in on the ground floor of the next great leader of the Bronx. Herman likes Zeke's boldness and invites him to dinner.

In preparation for the DJ battle Ra-Ra is hanging out with Shaolin reading comics. They need a secret weapon for the battle and Ra-Ra starts talking about Wolverine and Cyclops having to work together because there's no "X-Man in X-Men." Shaolin is confused but eventually Ra-Ra gets the idea that the whole crew can rap to beat the Infamous 3.

Meanwhile Dizzee is out looking for his magical white boy Thor. However nobody has seen him, but suggest to look in the tunnels because he's working on something big. Dizzee see's Thor is working on creating one of Dizzee's own sketches and at least knows he isn't crazy.

Later the crew is hanging out and spitting the rhymes Zeke wrote and it's a cool scene because it shows the different styles of artist. Dizzee raps slow but he's a natural. Boo-Boo raps and then he gets too into it and starts singing and dancing like Michael Jackson. Everyone is confused and Shaolin stops the music like "what the fuck is that." Boo-Boo responds, "I know it was lame, I won't do it again," just for Shaolin to yell "No nigga, you the secret weapon." Then we get to Ra-Ra who just stuttering through his verse. He's upset because Shaolin is being honest, they can't let him up there stuttering like Forest Gump. However Dizzee has the idea to use a faster beat because he says Ra-Ra is always pent up and thinking too fast. So Ra-Ra makes it through his verse easily with no stutters at super speed.

Zeke heads out to get ready for Dinner and the Kiplings hang with Shaolin at the abandoned building he's now calling his mansion. Only for them to find Napoleon on the rooftop. Fat Annie's crew has been looking for him to find out who paid The Warlords. Shao is supposed to take him to Charles, the guy who was Cadillac and accidentally made him shoot the other kid.

This episode didn't add any major points but it had some cool moments. Zeke's uncle clearly gets into Zeke's head throughout the series despite everyone else thinking the worst. He did teach Zeke the value of hard work. He convinced him to go to the internship when nobody else could. Yet everyone keeps acting like he's the worst thing for Zeke. Jackie's moment of inspiration was cool too. He started just throwing pieces together. First piano, now you with the strings. Regina and Yolanda stop playing and harmonize. While there weren't any twists that changed the plot, it just kept us heading toward our destination.
