Ben Carson is not an Uncle Tom - He's a Coward

Ben Carson has been called a lot of things: Uncle Tom, house nigga, and coon of the year, just to name a few. He's received heavy criticism for his statements about the black community during debates and campaign stops. I don't think Ben Carson is an Uncle Tom or a house nigga. I think he's something far worse. I think he's a coward and he's spineless. He'll do and say anything to become president even if it means compromising morals he's stood on his entire life.

I think we should start with Ben Carson's early life. Carson was poor growing up and after his parents spit he was raised by a single mother. Ben Carson is not from a gifted background. He admittedly had to struggle, not only economically but with his race as well. In his book, One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America, Ben Carson takes the time to comment on the death of Trayvon Martin. Ben Carson states:
"I can remember times when I would be walking in a white neighborhood and in short order a police car would show up, undoubtedly summoned by a concerned onlooker."
He goes on to tell other stories of where his race placed him in situations where he feared for his life. He also mentions how insurance companies were uneasy paying for procedures in full. While he didn't directly say it, he heavily implied he faced even more issues than most doctors because he was black. His book made it obvious that he sees racial issues in America both past and present.

Recently during protest in Baltimore over the murder of Freddy Gray by police officers, Ben Carson was the only presidential candidate to go to Baltimore, stopping to speak at several churches. While some listeners stated they didn't agree with everything he said, they made sure to point out how important it was to see that he cared. Despite what he may be saying now, he does care.

The Carson's Scholars Program has helped send 6,700 students to universities across the company an dozens of different areas of study. Many of these students are from underprivileged areas. The site is plastered with photos of smiling white children, until you look at the galleries. Then you realize majority of these students are black, Latino, and Asian. Another program provided by Carson's Scholars is their Reading Room program. The foundation provides libraries and quiet reading areas to under funded schools. Again, in majority minority areas.

In 2000 Carson received a Jefferson Award for his philanthropy. Strange for a man who has been making disparaging comments about the poor. In 2005 he won yet another award for his philanthropic ways, this time the William E. Simon Prize. While sitting on the board of directors fro Kellog, Carson led the way to offer health insurance to partners of LGBT members of the workforce. He also helped create the policy that barred discrimination in the hiring policy based on sexual orientation. In 2008 he received the Lincoln Medal for demonstrating: courage, integrity, tolerance, equality and creative expression. The same things he seems to have forgotten during this campaign season.

That's the problem with Ben Carson, he seems to have forgotten everything he's done and what he has overcame. Ben Carson saw a dip in his polling numbers after defending Jesse Jackson on Fox News. Since then it's been off to the races with him as he attempts to say the most outlandish things he possibly can. That's what makes Ben Carson so frustrating.

He'll do anything he can to be president and that includes trampling over his previous work and statements. Ben Carson has backtracked on every thing he worked hard to do. Ben Carson worked to give young minorities chances that he did not have. Ben Carson stated "the state of homophobia in America is sad and misplaced." Now he has started heaping on the homophobia with quotes such as:
"A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question."
Ben has backtracked from meeting with protesters over the murder of a black man to stating that #BlackLivesMatter is offensive and threatening to police. Ben Carson has backtracked on everything he stood for until July of 2015. Since then he has done nothing but turn his back on the people he once attempted to build up.

How can a man speak so ill of his fellow black people, while still giving them scholarships? It would be easy for me to write off Ben Carson as an Uncle Tom. Instead he's something worse. A house nigga would at least stand by his statements. Ben Carson can't even do that. He backtracks on everything has lived for only to do a 180 because it offers him a better chance at winning the presidency. You could at least respect him if he had these views from the jump, but he didn't and at times it's clear that he still doesn't.

But he's worse than someone who actually holds these views. Now people can say "Ben Carson has done so much for the black community and even he thinks they're garbage." Ben you're lame. It's disgusting really. You saw Donald Trump making gains for being outrageous and you did the same because you want to win so much. You want to win so much you compromised your entire standing and credibility.

If you had been Allen West, Bill Cosby or Stacy Dash from the start, I could have dealt with it. Instead, in your private life you've dedicated substantial time and money to minority communities while mumbling ridiculous statements in public. You state in your book that not only was the murder of Trayvon Martin racially motivated, you could relate based on experience. Yet, when you're running for president you can tell Fox News that racial profiling is not a threat to black people.

In my eyes, Ben Carson is worse than the coon of the year. He's in the same boat as Don Lemon. Someone who is willing to trample over everything they've done for money and power. Even if he has to shirk away from previous statements that he's made. Even if it means they have to push everyone else down to get there.
