What's Wrong With Dolph Ziggler

Tag Team Champion, United States Champion, Mr. Money In The Bank, Intercontinental Champion, World Heavyweight Champion, and even a Triple Crown Winner. There's only two things left that Dolph Ziggler hasn't accomplished in WWE. Those are win the Royal Rumble and win the WWE Championship. However Dolph is far away from where he was during his World Heavyweight Championship reigns.

Something is wrong with Dolph Ziggler and things won't get better until they change. I like Dolph Ziggler, or at least I did. Now I sort of just try to like him, I try to remember the past. There's a lot of things wrong with Dolph these days. Have you heard of any of his promos lately? Dolph Ziggler had never been a slouch on the mic. He was the standout in the Spirit Squad and talked his way up the SmackDown ranks as a solo star. That's changed. Now when Dolph grabs the mic it's all about how many times he can tell us he's underrated, overlooked and the greatest while not turning heel. Dolph has hit the Hulk Hogan point that John Cena was stuck in a little while ago. He's at the point where he's become so comfortable that he can give the same promo every week and hope nobody notices.

I'm sorry Dolph, but it's stale. At some point you have to stop talking about it and do something about it. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd were stuck at that point, then they did something about it. It doesn't help that he's been stuck with Lana for no reason at all. Maybe it's because his comedy sets weren't well received that he's stuck in his rut, but he definitely needs to get out of it. Comedy may not be for Dolph, but wrestling is and that involves speaking on the mic. Especially for someone who is good at it. Everyone has an off night on the mic, but Dolph has had an off year.

Dolph is a great wrestler, that can't be denied. He has however run into some problems. Dolph has always been applauded for his ability to sell the impact of moves. He's able to make even routine moves look devastating, and that's become a problem. Flying across the ring doing a complete backflip makes no sense. Yet it's become normal in the overselling that Ziggler does. Normal punches sending him spinning out of control. It's at the point that it doesn't look good or fluid. It's silly looking and wrestling doesn't really need another reason to look silly.

Another aspect of Ziggler's ring work that has gone down hill? Storytelling. A big aspect of the match is telling an actual story and Ziggler can do this. His World Heavyweight Championship with Alberto Del Rio is legendary for it's storytelling. Ziggler was returning from a concussion. Del Rio spent the match attacking Ziggler's head. Ziggler did an excellent job of displaying a desperate offensive. It was a great match. The problem is Ziggler hasn't told a story in a match for a long time.

Now all of his matches seem to feature Dolph being decimated by his opponent, only to finish up with a big move out of nowhere. To his credit Ziggler doesn't suffer from the predictable 5 moves of doom like majority of the WWE roster, but he's become even more predictable than most of the roster. It's sad because in the past Ziggler's matches were great because of the unpredictability. Now there's no secret as to how the matches are going to end.

I know Dolph is in a crappy angle right now. But that doesn't change anything I've said. He was stagnant for a long period beforehand. In fact it had gotten so bad that when his contract ended earlier this year everyone expected him to jump ship. Now he's changed his attire to look more like a retro Shawn Michaels. Attire changes can't change when a character has become stale. There's a lot of things wrong with Dolph Ziggler but all of them can be fixed. It's one of the rare times that the person doesn't need anything new. This time Dolph Ziggler needs to revert to a previous incarnation.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.

  1. Dolph Ziggler I think should be in the main event. This guy has worked his ass off and had the people loving him for it. I blame the WWE Creative for this. They fucked him over as guys like him, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, and Dean Ambrose are guys that have what it takes to be big stars. Instead, it's still about John Cena and whoever is sucking his dick at the moment. It's shit like this that made me stop watching WWE for nearly a year now.
