In Defense of Black Jesus

Recently Adult Swim released their trailor for a new series called Black Jesus from Aaron McGruder, the man behind The Boondocks. While most people found the trailor to be hilarious one group didn't. One Million Moms is a group made up of members from the American Family Association released a statement about the trailer that stated, as follows:

“The garbage that passes for entertainment continues to disturb us. Even the three-minute trailer was too vile to watch, with multiple uses of the f-word by the actor portraying ‘Black Jesus.’ Christians and anyone who believes in respecting faith must come together to make sure this program never airs.” Tim Wildmon

The organization was quick to denounce and call the series vile and disgusting. But why did so many find comedy where AFA found disgust? Let's call AFA what it is. It is a radical, right wing, Christian, fundamentalist organization that owns almost 200 radio stations. You may think that isn't important but it is. In 2009 a lawsuit was filed against AFA by former employees for creating a racist and homophobic work environment.

It's no surprise that the AFA would have a problem with Black Jesus. But if they actually looked at the trailer they would realize that it might just be one of the realist and accurate portrayals of Jesus Christ ever. People like the AFA would lead you to bekieve that Jesus hung around those of the highest morals but that simply isn't true.

In the trailer several people let Jesus know they don't care who he is. Simply being Jesus won't make them change their ways. One woman even goes so far as to knock Jesus out. Another threatens him to have her things exactly how she wants it or he's going to have a problem. Several men threaten to shoot Jesus and claim to be agnostic when he tells them who he is. All of these things most likely would happen in today's world.

Another scene depicts Jesus telling a man "I died for your sins" and getting the response "That was 2014 years ago." The fact is that some people don't want to hear about Jesus, like it or not. That's the attitude plenty of people take when hearing about Jesus so why would you be offended by something that's frequent in today's world. Black Jesus isn't about Jesus traveling through the desert. It's Jesud traveling through today's world.

There's also a man in the trailer that hopes to use Jesus to make more money for his businesses. How could this offend the AFA. A Christian organization owning 180 radio stations that made their owners millions. No way they could be offended by that. They do the same thing. Plaster the face of God on it and sell it.

A third man goes around attempting to convince people that Jesus isn't real. Claiming Jesus is nothing more than a liar and a cult leader. People do that every day, start cults and say Jesus isn't real. Does that offend you? Or is is the the homeless man? The homeless man that ask Jesus for lottery numbers and receives kindness and wisdom only to respond by telling Jesus nobody wants that.

I'm going to tell you the real reason the AFA is upset. Jesus is played by a black actor. When was the last time you saw a depiction of Jesus Christ that wasn't portrayed by a white msn with long brown hair and blue eyes? In the Bible it says that Jesus was a dark skinned man with hair of wool. Do you know who has dark skin and hair of wool? Black people around the world. That's what offends you. There was no issue with The Passion of Christ or any of the History Channel "documentaries" when Jesus was a white man and Satan was Barack Obama. Yet the moment that Jesus is portrayed by a black man in modern situations it becomes offensive. Examine yourselves AFA. You're what's really offensive to Christians.

  1. I was actually hoping for a cartoon, an I wasn't okay with this at 1st because of all the cussing an foolishness, but this is a good piece on why its okay. But I still wanted a cartoon, an yes people are only mad because hes a black man.

    1. Yeah, I thought it'd be a cartoon to so I was a little disappointed as well. But after watching the trailer I'm convinced it'll still be highly entertaining.

  2. I just watched the 1st episode, it was funny, but I did not like all the weed references an cursing an Nword, because contrary to belief not all black people smoke weed or curse or say the Nword. My argument against would be that its a shame that this Black Jesus is the first image that some of our people an mostly every one else have seen of a Black Messiah, cause as we all know parents work an work an never actually done research of history or even questioned a white Jesus, an young folk are looking at it as more of a joke while the ones who are informed an have actually done research find it offensive, I too find it offensive, but I also recognize if not for this show the Words Black an Jesus would not be in the same sentence or in alot of peoples minds so it forces the issue with some who avoid it, its a double edged sword. But the very title Black Jesus kinda lets me know that the show is not for black people cause if u have to say "Black Jesus" u dont believe in the 1st place, I believe in Jesus an the fact that he was black but I recognized he damn sure wasn't white like white people swear by.

I give the 1st episode a C+ because the Messages in the show were too subtle, an there is too much weed an cursing, I did like Jesus. (an at the end when the guy wanted to plant a garden I smiled) I also felt they were saying black people should be eating vegetables an fruit more so than meat which is actually a fact of life before slavery in America. If it was a cartoon I wouldn't be taking it so serious. The messages need to be clearer an they need to ramp it up

    1. I'm glad you were able to see both sides. Yes there were too msny marijuana and alcohol references as well as over usage of the word nigga but there were still good messages burried deep in there. Giving up on growing weed, to plant a vegetable garden. As well as not needing lottery money, just peace and kindness. I enjoyed the first episode. Sadly I don't think many people are going to bother to look deaper for the message, but Aaron McGruder has never been known to openly state the message. He tries to lead us to it but can't force us to get it.

  3. "In the Bible it says that Jesus was a dark skinned man with hair of wool. Do you know who has dark skin and hair of wool?"

You're better off using a direct quote from the Bible to back this claim up than simply stating it.

PS. No one will take this depiction seriously because it's a comedy. If Jesus/God is meant to be depicted seriously, they'd cast a white man. Only when it's a comedy, do they cast a black man.

PS. No, Jesus would not have been a lily white man.
