The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Game Review

(Spidey)

What's up ya'll it's Jaz. It's been awhile since I posted on here but I'm back and have a good old game review. I'm going to give you my own personal review on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Game for the Xbox One. First of all, this review for the game didn't almost happen. There was a whole big thing about the game not being put on Xbox One. Something about sales or something, ah well it's irrelevant now because the game finally came out on Xbox one a few days after the release of the other consoles. So now to the game, Spider-Man. Oh how I always have high hopes for a Spider-Man Game. My first Spider-Man game was "Spider-Man" which was really cool because it had alternate costumes such as the symbiote, Ben Riley's outfit and even the short lived yet incredibly awesome Spider-Man Unlimited costume (So Badass). The next Spider-Man game that I played and honestly probably the best one is Spider-Man 2: The Video Game....okay now this game was the shit, traveling around a huge and I mean huge free-roam version of New York....as Spider-Man...leveling him up and doing insane combos. The came Ultimate Spider-Man....which was horribly gross...ugh just...no. Spider-Man 3 was okay being a Spider-Man fan made you ignore how bootleg the game was. Spider-Man web of shadows was pretty decent...glitchy but had a good plot, alternate endings and Venom? Heck yeah that's a recipe for a good game (Save for Spider-Man having an annoying voice...like go listen to it if you haven't played the game...I'll wait....ok see yeah imagine that for like 8 -10 hours of gameplay). So then well the next couple of games I skipped because the developers were idiots and yanno got rid of the open world for Spider-Man....smart. They finally brought it back for The Amazing Spider-Man Game based off the reboot movie, and honestly that game wasn't half bad, decent length story, could find hidden costumes, fight some rebooted villains like scorpion etc, yeah it was a little buggy and the last boss was a joke...but I liked that damn game.

Okay enough rambling time for the review off the game that brought us here lets split it up into different sections okay?

Story: 5.5/10 (Spoilers ahoy) Okay so these games try to spin you a tale that doesn't spoil the movie that was released with said game, which many fans can be thankful for. The story basically follows Peter trying to find his Uncle Ben's killer...yeah sorry I ruined it for you...Uncle Ben died. Anyways he tries to find his Uncle's Killer which leads him to an Adventure filled with Self- Discovery. Why does he do the right thing? Instead of constantly putting villains and criminals in jail...why not put them down for good? We'll that's where Kraven the Hunter comes in, who is deadest on unleashing the killer instinct that is in Spider-Man to make him strong...but what's his true intentions? Throw in Kingpin funding a crime task force (to keep the heat off him and on Spider-Man if the player is a dick and ignores citizens), Black Cat, Shocker (lame fight) The Green Goblin and Electro (which these two aren't even the big villains of this game) and friggen Cletus Kasady...a.k.a Carnage is in the game and let me tell you...his part in the game just gives you a stomach cramp....like why? I won't go into detail but...fuck. Anyway its an okay story but it just didn't grab me as much as it should of.

Gameplay:  5/10 ugh.. I hate giving it a 2/5  but I have to, okay the reason is...well sometimes the gameplay is just really annoying. You're swinging around as Spider-Man which the controls for Web Swinging are smooth, they went back to the whole using the left and right trigger to shoot webs and Spidey has to be by a building which is realistic and also they kept the web rush feature that was in the previous game. Spider-Man flows pretty good in fighting scenarios, against common crooks pressing a button when enemies flash to counter them. They have some level up aspects and there is some combat features that I honestly found stupid/ annoying such as the corrosion webs or the seismic blast which was stupid to include because they only are needed for a specific type of enemy. The costume aspects we're pretty cool, you unlock costumes by stealing stolen tech. (Miles Morales costume ftw) The costumes also have unique statistics and you level them up. There is  also a collection aspect such as finding audio files to learn more about characters, and also collecting comic books where getting a certain amount could allow you to read comics at Stan Lee's shop (Best Part of the Game). Okay now here is the problem okay first of all they give you these stupid missions as Peter where you walk around being awkward as hell and have mass effect style conversations with people to get info...which WAS POINTLESS. Like I wouldn't mind playing as Peter if you actually did something relevant but taking a break from the game to have boring dialogue options, which is basically Parker just asking questions about the current situation just wasn't a good move. THE WORST PART ABOUT THE FREAKING GAME WAS THE HERO METER THINGY. HOLY SHIT, while at first a cool concept, it slowly began to haunt my existence because, if Spider-Man misses a hero opportunity....that shit goes down, if he fails one that shit goes down....so while it's cool to understand the struggles of saving everyone....at least give us a decent time limit to zip across the city.

Missions:

Steal tech (stealth missions unlocking new suits.

Car chases: boring just an annoying quick time event.

Beat up random thugs: refreshing yet lame after awhile. They start to give you like 4 dudes to fight or less.

Deadlock: just a large scale thug beat down.

Rescue: save a random citizen with no time limit and get the to the hospital...boring.

Bomb: find a hidden bomb using your spidey sense and jet across the city with a super short time limit to throw it into the river.

Crime scene : take a fucking pic on Peter's phone.

Fire: Oh the bane of my existence. fire missions are horribly awful wanna know why? You got like 60 seconds to fly in there and fucking find 5 people in a burning building and everywhere you step there's fire, but yanno spiderman is fucking disgusting to control inside buildings in this game and while I want to rescue the person trapped under rubble I can't because Spider-Man wants to go and stick on a fucking wall in the fire killing himself as opposed to saving the girl who is dying. Oh and yanno if Spider-Man doesn't save 1 person...bam you failed it completely nope so guess what you just wasted your time doing that and you lost the Hero Points you probably just earned, FUN RIGHT!?  Fuck fires.

Graphics: 9/10 The graphics were good, playing on the Xbox One obviously they were going to have next gen level specs. I also checked out some gameplay of it on Xbox 360 and PS3 both of which were also pretty good, a step up from the previous game.

Challenge: 2/10 this game was not hard at all it has 3 difficulties easy, normal. and hard....if you can't play this game on hard and beat it...you have the gaming skills of 7 year old with no arms.

Replay Value: Low. I mean if you wanna level up all the suits and collect all the stuff in it, go for it, but by the time its over your kinda just like....I'm done.

Overall Score: 4/10

Conclusion: I had high hopes for this game, and while it had its good points....they just couldn't get my mind off the bad points. I was so amped for this game at first after seeing the first footage of it, and then disappointed after watching the credits. Spider-Man has the potential to produce amazing game, such as  Spider-Man 2: The Game and Spider-Man Web of Shadows...I was expecting something like that but this latest installment should be called The Mediocre at Best Spider-Man....sorry spidey.
